Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On the morning of July 6, 2022, Ou Sophy, a 35-year-old bodyguard was arrested in Sa'ang district, Kandal province for shooting a 42-year-old driver, Kong Piseth, in a villa #38, village 8, street 322, Sangkat Boeung Keng Kong 1, Khan Boeung Keng Kong, Phnom Penh.

Back story on the murder of a man working as a security guard and driver at a tycoon's villa in Phnom Penh:

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): At 2:15 pm on July 5, 2022, in a villa belonging to an unidentified Oknha on street 322, Sangkat Boeung Keng Kong 1, Khan Boeung Keng Kong, Phnom Penh, an altercation led to murder between a private bodyguard and a private driver working for the unidentified Cambodian tycoon: The (unnamed) bodyguard allegedly shot the 44-year-old driver, Kong Piseth, and ran away after the shooting.

According to the witness, the suspect and the victim worked for the same boss and had an altercation prior to the incident on the previous day. Then on the day of the incident, the victim was sitting at the guard booth of the villa,when the suspect, leaving the villa, fired 12 gunshots at the victim and killed him instantly before fleeing the crime scene.

Suspect in fatal shooting arrested
Police yesterday arrested a suspect over Tuesday’s fatal shooting of a tycoon’s driver in Phnom Penh’s Boeng Keng Kang district.

The murder took place at about 2.30pm at a villa in Boeng Keng district’s Boeng Keng Kang I commune.

Municipal Penal Police Chief Colonel Eng Sorphea identified the suspect as Ou Sophy, 39, from Kandal province’s Sa’ang district and who also worked for the tycoon’s family.

He identified the victim as Kong Suth, 44, from Prey Veng province’s Preah Sdach district.

He said municipal police in cooperation with Kandal provincial penal police arrested Sophy in Sa’ang district’s Prek Ambel commune where he had fled to after the shooting.

Col Sorphea said the victim was the tycoon’s driver while the suspect worked as the children’s bodyguard and driver.

He added that according to police’s investigation, a day before the murder, the victim and suspect argued with each other.

The next morning, they both continued to quarrel with each other again.

“During police interrogation, the suspect confessed that he shot the victim because he was angry with him for always insulting him and also threatening to kill him during their quarrel on Tuesday,” Col Sorphea said. “He confessed that he fired 12 shots at the victim and one more shot into the air before fleeing from the place,” he said.

“He also confessed that after shooting the victim, he fled to his wife’s home in Kandal province’s Takhmao city, where he hid his gun before fleeing to Sa’ ang district to hide,” he added.

Boeng Keng Kang I commune deputy police chief Major Long Sopheng said that the suspect is still being temporarily detained at the district police station for further investigations.

He said that Sophy is accused of committing “premeditated murder and unauthorised holding weapon” and faces a life sentence if convicted.

Maj Sopheng added that he would be sent to Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning today.

UPDATE: Suspected Killer Has Dementia

Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: The police force of Boeung Keng Kang district on the morning of July 8, 2022, sent the murder suspect, Ou Sophy, a 22-year-old male, born in Saang district, Kandal province, a bodyguard for Tycoon Lim Bunsour, to Phnom Penh Municipal Court for official questioning and temporary prison detention.


The above case was investigated by Mr. Heng Pheng, Deputy Prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court. Under investigation, prosecutors are unlikely to be able to obtain a formal statement from the suspect, as he is in a state of dementia, with memory loss, like a drug addict.




According to the joint report, the police sent the suspect as a murderer to the court, accusing the suspect of intentional murder with aggravated circumstances. Therefore, this case was sent to the investigating judge, who decided to detain the suspect and put him in prison temporarily, until he recovers his wits and his memory enough to be questioned.
