Cambodia New Year

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Cambodia New Year

Post by ColoradoVacation »

Is this a period of celebration for 3 days, about to wrap up on Friday?

What are some of the main activities and events for the holiday?

It seems that absolutly everything shuts down, including the US Embassy.

CEO Forum will not be shutting down over KNY, so everything is under control.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

It's the biggest holiday in the Thai, Khmer, Lao and Myanmar calendar - it's like Christmas in much of the West and yes, everything of any real importance shuts down for it. Normal service, sort of, will be resumed on Monday but expect huge amounts of queuing to be done in embassies/consulates as a week's worth of backlog arrives to get things done.

Water splashing (and sometimes flour throwing) is what the holiday is about. There are often things happening on temple grounds too. (That is modern working temples not ancient ones - though Angkor Wat often has a big celebration around it too).

It is.standard procedure for any embassy to.honor the holidays of both
the host country as well as their own. For one thing local Khmer embassy employees would be quite upset if they were denied the most important holiday in.their country
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

1. Yes.

2. Getting drunk, getting flour thrown at you, avoiding drunk drivers, avoiding drunk drivers throwing flour at you.

3. Yes. The countryside is about 1000% more busy than usual though.
