Photo Equipment Thief in Sihanoukville

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Michel : Sorry i don't have much information about him, since the reservation was on my name. It happened in otres beach this night, guest house aside the road. Camera brand is Canon Mark 3 with 3 pro lenses (16-35 / 24-70 / 70-200 all 2.8 ) big bag lowe pro black. Again his name is eddy from australia and we shared a room together only one night - sorry but i have no more info to provide.

-1 for Australians ?
Seriously, this is a good reminder that just being a fellow foreigner does not make someone trustworthy. Often happens that travelers are on their guard against locals, but blindly trust a random foreigner - seemed like a good bloke.

How many of these stories have we seen? Why are dudes sharing guesthouse rooms with dudes they don't know, especially if carrying $10,000 in camera equipment? It's either very gay or someone being very cheap.

He doesn't seem to have much of a case.

He let "Eddie from Australia" stay in his room that he checked in to, so he doesn't even really know his name.

Seems he has no real proof that he even stole it, other than, "he stayed in my room and now my shit is missing."

From the victim:

"This is a camera photo from hotel. He has stolen my pro photo bag - value 10000 usd. I shared a room with him in Sihanoukville one night. His name is eddy and he is from australia. Thanks a lot. 500 usd Reward for any valuable information."

I've done a lot of stupid shit, but letting a dude stay in my room with $10,000 worth of anything in it is not one of them.

Some one suggested with stories like this, and not saying this is one of them, its to make a false insurance claim. And it was a Khmer that deals a lot with the traveller/gap year types the made the suggestion.....
Hope if his gear has been stolen he gets it back, little chance though

Which is good in theory but most people are so dim witted that they don't know travel insurance won't cover $10,000 of camera kit... you need specialist camera insurance for that and nearly nobody has it.

If he's a professional photographer then he'll probably have work insurance for his gear. It's just that you shouldn't invite unknowns into your room when you have valuable stuff lying around. At least put your stuff where it's hard to get at. Foreigners that you met in a bar last night are not your best friends for life, any more than a random motodop is. (This should be obvious, but ...)
