Motorbike documents- what should be present?

Post by Freightdog »

I am looking at buying a motorbike. What documents should the seller have that enable the bike to be purchased, and immediately/legally used?
Registration?
Tax paperwork?

Having been presented with a myriad explanations for differing and inconsistent documents when looking at cars, I’m guessing that bikes will be the same.

Just the registration card.

Check if the data on the card match the motorcycle (plate number, engine number, frame number). And you might want to check if the person on the card is the seller, if the seller claims to be the first owner.

When you request the plate and matching card they will keep the tax papers, so every owner with a plate will no longer have the tax paper.

If it only has a tax paper, and has not been registered, also check the numbers and make sure the date on the paper is less than six months old. If it is a dealer they should do all the registration for you as it is a ballache to do as a barang.

It is a privately owned bike, as far as I know, it was purchased from a dealer about 5 years ago.

When I was previously looking at buying an SUV, it appeared to be properly registered, but suddenly there was a big question mark about tax paperwork. So the deal fell through.

If it has the ID card, and all the numbers match, then it is all good. No need to worry about tax papers as that has all been sorted.

If it was purchased five years ago and still has no registration (ID card) I would walk away.
