MAGA, I figured out what days America was great

Post by phuketrichard »

trump says
The answer, Trump explained, was during periods of military and industrial expansion at the onset of the 20th century and again in the years after World War II.

“If you look back, it really was, there was a period of time when we were developing at the turn of the century which was a pretty wild time for this country and pretty wild in terms of building that machine, that machine was really based on entrepreneurship,” he told the Times.

Trump also pointed to the “late ’40s and ‘50s,” a time when, he said, “we were not pushed around, we were respected by everybody, we had just won a war, we were pretty much doing what we had to do.”
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Boy, the way Glenn Miller played
songs that made the hit parade
Guys like me we had it made
Those were the days

Didn't need no welfare state
ev'rybody pulled his weight
gee our old LaSalle ran great
Those were the days

And you knew who you were then
girls were girls and men were men
Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again

People seemed to be content
fifty dollars paid the rent
freaks were in a circus tent
Those were the days

Take a little Sunday spin
go to watch the Dodgers win
Have yourself a dandy day
that cost you under a fin

Hair was short and skirts were long
Kate Smith really sold a song
I don't know just what went wrong
those were the days
. . . there's someone in my head, but it's not me . . .

Whenever MAGA is mentioned, and I recall even intelligent folks from the US* that I’ve worked with going on about how great America is, while coming across as slightly above mediocre at best, this Jeff Danial’s scene always springs to mind-

And shows like this

Where examples of the talent and capacity for uttering the truth just don’t reside in the places where it’s needed most.

*because, while the US population may make up the greatest proportion of the total population of North America, the US is not America. It is a part of it, albeit sometimes the loudest.

I've never seen All in the Family but I know that it was a 'remake' of the BBC comedy Till Death Us Do Part. Here's Alf Garnett ranting about immigrants taking advantage of the British healthcare system

Trigger Warning: It features Spike Milligan in blackface. Also references to MGM.

Bonus feature: Tony Blair's father in law plays a scouse git.
