Price of Nutella...

Post by orichá »

The price of one 680 gram jar of Nutella at Makro, and it is even more at other supermarkets in Cambodia, I think:

$12.30 u.s.
Image

Here is the price at Walmart U.S.A. for a 26.5 ounce jar, which is 750 grams:

$7.62 u.s.

At Walmart Canada, a 725 gram jar is 6.47 Canadian dollars, or U.S. $4.83...

$4.83 u.s.

The Canadian price is probably lower because it does not include the possible addition of local sales taxes. But the excessive price of the Nutella in Cambodia surely cannot be explained by transportation costs, no way! Import tax on food must be inordinate, and the Cambodian (or other?) importers/middlemen the most greedy pigs ever-ever!!!

Customs duty on cocoa products is indeed high, 35%. This might explain why a big Fruit and Nut type Cadbury bar costs 2.70 in Malaysia and 4.90 to 6 dollars here, lol...

Sounds like a once in a year event, lol... What did you pay, actually, and for how many grams?

By the time I get up there, (that's near Russian Bvld?), the sale will be over, I'm sure...

Thanks for your input...

At least you can now get it in Cambodia.
I’m in Australia, we pay higher prices for food from the UK. It’s how the world works - supply and demand
Despite what angsta states, it’s clear from reading through his posts that angsta supports the free FreePalestine movement.

It's an unhealthy product made by an unethical company, although it's nice on a pizza base with sliced bananas once in a blue moon

Lol, I've seen some weird pizzas in my time but never heard of Nutella/banana, sounds like a great dessert though. I have friends who still haven't gotten over Hawaiian pizzas because they say pineapple shouldn't be on a pizza, I'd love to see how they'd react to Nutella and banana.

Uhmm, the prices I quoted for Nutella were from Canada and the U.S. . . Nutella is produced in Italy. So, transport to Canada and the U.S. would be maybe a third or one half than to Australia. I don't know. And I am not sure the argument, "at least you can get it here..." holds any water. That feels like saying, "at least some of us can drive a Ferrari."

My point is that something is seriously wrong with pricing of imports in Cambodia. Anyone can see that some middleman is ripping everyone off. Nothing to do with supply and demand. If the price was within reason, demand would increase significantly, lol...

And, I think Soriya is lying about the "half-price" sale at Lucky, too. Maybe he got a bargain on some expired Nutella? ...I've never seen any sale at any supermarket in Cambodia... It's impossible...

Everything is overpriced here in Cambodia now, especially ALL the foreigner-owned restos in Phnom Penh. I will be doing my own pizza-pie baking and eat at reasonably priced Cambodian-owned restaurants for certain from now on, too...
