Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was attacked by a man from behind while he was making a stump speech on a street in Nara on Friday. The police seized the man who attacked Abe at around 11:30 a.m. NHK reported that Abe appeared to have been shot in the chest and was bleeding. He was rushed to a hospital. An reporter from the public broadcaster claimed to have heard what appeared to be a gun shot.

Political assassinations happen here occasionally. Overwhelmingly done with knives and swords. Very traditional.

Happens a lot more than people think, sometimes as "suicide" by train or jumping off a bridge in "despair".

Gun is a lot less common though, but I wont speculate to why it was the weapon of choice.
