Born in Svey Rieng, Vietnam

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Born in Svey Rieng, Vietnam

Making the rounds in Facebook. Apparently some birth certificates coming from Svey Rieng, now say country of birth: Vietnam.

Birth certificates are in official the Khmer ones, listing father, mother, etc.

Is this just a clerical error, or is it being secretly handed over?

You are kidding right NKOTB ? Of course Svay Rieng province is being secretly handed over to the Vietnamese, by turning all the occupants into Vietnamese citizens. And nobody will ever notice.

:director: If it's a Cambodian rumour on Facebook, then of course it's true! Seriously, Cambodian social media thrives on rumours and manufactured outrage. It doesn't take much to start a fire. Why encourage this ? :BangHead:

You need to tell your Birdy to stop believing everything she reads on the anti-Vietnamese FB groups she follows.

The locals always believe stuff on FB.
“They say that..”
“Who’s ‘They’ exactly?”
“On FB”
>bites tongue<

That whole tsunami nonsense was exacerbated by those groups (and Telegram).

The reporters in Cambodia self censor reporting news. Reporters have to decide whether reporting something steps on any toes before they publish. Facebook, on the other hand (at least in Cambodia) reports everything first.

The news about Kulen mountain, users on Facebook reported it first.

Sensitive subjects will report on Facebook first, and sometimes or never, mentioned on official news sources.

Not that I place too much faith in the quality of reporting, in general- but did you really mean to say that? Or was it just a clumsily worded way of suggesting that reporters should, and need to, fact check before running off at the mouth/keyboard, whereas with tiktok/Facebook types, anyone can write anything, and the herds of wide eyed viewers are free to regurgitate without thinking?

Fact checking, 2 credible independent sources, etc, all takes time.
Typing at random and hitting enter is a bit quicker, even if it’s only one finger typing.

“Sensitive subjects” or total bollocks, as we say in Germany.
