Relatives Suspected Young Husband of Causing Wife's Death

Cambodia News, (Takeo Province): On July 10, 2023, the local police in Bati District, Takeo Province, arrested a 26-year-old man accused of using violence against his 40-year-old wife, which resulted in her death at a hospital in Phnom Penh on 9 July. The husband Sar Vibol, who works as a casino employee, was living in a rented room with his wife Muong Sophan, in Bavet Kandal village, Bavet commune, Bavet city, Svay Rieng province.

According to a later police report, at around 11 pm on the night of July 4, 2023, the young husband, who was mad with jealousy, had beaten up his wife in their rented room in Bavet. He hit her several times in the face and head, and jumped on her chest and stomach area, causing her serious internal injuries.

After the beating, the husband took his wife to Svay Rieng Provincial Referral Hospital for treatment, telling them that she was sick from an illness. She was then sent to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital in Phnom Penh, but after several days, on July 9, 2023, the victim's condition became steadily worse; she went into a coma, and died that night.


The husband then took his wife's body to her family home in Krous village, Bati district, Takeo province, for the funeral rites. However, in her village, the woman's family wondered about the unusual state of the body, and why there was so much swelling and bruising on the face and body, that looked different from any illness. The relatives were suspicious about the cause of the woman's death, so they reported this information to the authorities, asking them to conduct an autopsy.

Following the results of the autopsy, on July 10, 2023, the Commissioner of Takeo Provincial Police ordered the specialized force of Bati District Police Inspectorate to apprehend and arrest the suspect, Sar Vibol, for using violence against his wife and causing her death. He will appear before the Takeo provincial court.
