What does 'Koi' mean in Khmer?

Post by xandreu »

I take my weekly laundry to a launderette close by my house and I've noticed that on quite a few of my items, someone from the launderette has written the word 'Koi' in biro in inconspicuous places, like on the washing label, inside of the top band of my boxer shorts, on the inner lining of my bedding etc...

Is it common to write on your laundry here? Does anyone have any idea what this is or what the word means? Is it some kind of secret code that someone who's imprisoned there is using to try to send messages to the outside world, or is it a simple way of distinguishing my laundry from everyone else's? If so, why 'Koi' ?

It is a way of distinguishing your laundry from that of other people.

Some other places tie colored string to clothes, a different color for each customer.

Oh, that's unfortunate, because there's quite an attractive beauty who works there who I chat with everytime I drop off / pick up my laundry and I was rather hoping someone would tell me that it means they secretly like me too and want me to take them out on a date.

Oh well... [sigh]

Most Cambodian girls wait until a male shows interest in her. Most wont let you know if they like you. A few do, either directly or unintentionally.

Cambodian girls dont date just for fun like western girls. To them it is about whether it will lead to marriage.

If a foreigner with money comes to Cambodia and meets a lot of girls, and finds one he wants to marry. There is a 90% chance she would be interested.

The first step is to ask her if she is single or married. Ask her if she has a boyfriend. Just ask her directly. Cambodians do that.

The challenge is getting to know them before deciding if you want to take it further. You can chat to her at the laundry. Ask her for her phone number and ring her. You can take her something nice to eat or drink. You can ask her where she lives, and go to visit her and her family at home. If you ask her out to a restaurant, when she hardly knows you she may not go. When she knows you better, she may bring a friend with her. As she gets to trust you more, she may be open to going more places.

You can also have girls who are just friends. They dont sleep with you.

When you realize that most Cambodian girls would be interested if you are serious, the thing is to go for a really good one, not the first one you meet.

I recommend people date girls with jobs, who dont expect you to give them money. University students, who should get a job when they finish, are another option.

Many girls play the game of making the foreigner believe they love them, so they can get money. When the money stops the girl is gone.

Sounds fishy.
