How many falang have Thai passports?

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

I know an old Italian guy in Korat who has a Thai passport. He got it in the 1980's apparently, before they changed the law. It is still possible to get one now but it involves lots of painful paperwork, possibly sponsorship and major ass kissing.

"Farang" originally referred to the French, but now applies to all Caucasians. So the answer is, none of them have Thai passports unless they're fake.

I believe that the Thai word farang was borrowed from some Indian language in which the term for a white-skinned European was feringhee.

This Indian word itself was borrowed from the Persian farangi, which was borrowed from the Arabic word faranji.

The Arab word faranji dates back to at least the 10th century and meant Franks.

Interestingly, the Persians used to refer to Western Europe as Farangistan, much in the same way some modern-day farangs refer to farang countries collectively as Farangland.

I understood 'farang' came from the thai saying 'farangset' which originally referred to the French.. Happy to be corrected on that tho..

Farang (فرنگ) is a Persian word which refers to Franks, the major Germanic tribe ruling Western Europe. In the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia "Farang" refers to Europeans. This in turn comes from the Old French word franc, meaning "Frank", a West Germanic tribe that became a major political power in Western and Central Europe during the early Middle Ages, and from which France derives its name. Because the Frankish Empire ruled a large part of Europe (France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Low Countries) for centuries, all Europeans and even Middle Easterners associated the word "Frank" with Latins who professed the Roman Catholic faith. Frangistan (Persian: فرنگستان‎) was a term used by Muslims and Persians in particular, during the Middle Ages and later periods, to refer to Western or Latin Europe. Muslims traders referred to European traders as Farang and it also entered in the local vernacular of South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Farang (Thai: ฝรั่ง [faràŋ], colloquially [falàŋ]) is a generic Thai word for person of white race no matter where they may come from. The Royal Institute Dictionary 1999, the official dictionary of Thai words, defines the word as "a person of white race".

PS:Farang is also a tasty fruit :beer3:
