GPS Tracker

Post by Tootsfriend »

Where to buy a GPS tracking device that can be placed in a package. Plenty advertised online but I want to see and examine it first hand before buying.
Note this would be the type that has its own battery and not hard wired as used in car's and motorbikes.
Turn the page, there could be a different story on the other side.

Using with an iPhone or not? Apple has a nice device, I've seen it work, but iPhone only and not directly based on GPS. It will connect to iPhones around and position itself based on the position of the surrounding iPhones. Called iTag or something.

There is a shop on 163 that has the Apple tags and they have the Galaxy tags that work with Samsung Galaxy but not with any other samsung or any other android. There is another tag that works with any android, but they did not have that one.

Apple seemingly has opened up their system so that you don’t need to buy the official Apple products.
You can buy cheaper non Apple branded tags which work on the same ‘find my’ system.
Plenty of these for sale on Aliexpress for a fraction of the price of Apple stuff

I am sure there are. My experience with the (USB)rechargeable batteries in the cheapies is extremely bad though, maybe others have had more luck? Never have had one lasting even a year before dropping dead.

Yeah, probably right. But at $20 or so for a pack of 4 it’s not a big loss to lose one. Unlike the Apple ones which are around $20 each…

Just drop the idea of getting a card/tag that is "rechargeable". There are plenty, plenty of 3rd party models already that rely on a CR2032 or whatever battery cell with a lifetime of at least 365 days, just like the original. While the Apple AirTags still probably cost you around USD 30, I see on Lazada that the other "Find My"-enabled knockoffs will only set you back as little as USD 7. If whatever you're sending is worth tracking, then surely some 10 dollars could be worth it at least I suppose :unknown:

Caveat Empor.

Cheap is for a reason.

There was a recent camping trip face off, two sets of campers with the challenge to sleep 1 night in their respective tents. One bought everything on Temu, the other everything on Amazon. The Temu team bragged about how much they saved. Until they almost froze in the middle the night and begged team Amazon to share their warm tent with them.

Is this package likely to go on a plane at any stage? If so, there are some restrictions but I think the Apple small ones are OK.
