Phnom Penh sex worker presumed drowned after security guard chase.
A raid on sex workers by Daun Penh District security guards on Sunday night turned to drama after the women fled on to tourist boats moored on the riverside, and one of the women slipped and hit her head before falling into the river. The woman was apparently left to drown deliberately by the security guards. Her body had not yet been recovered yesterday. (Monday 2 Jan.)

Chheng Leak, the owner of a tourist boat, said she saw about five women on the run along the riverside near Wat Phnom. “I saw the security guards chase them from the mainland to the boats,” she recalled.
She said one of them—a local sex worker she knew only as Kunthea—slipped while trying to jump from one boat to another, hitting her head as she fell into the water.
The woman remained motionless in the river, she said.
Ms. Leak said she tried to help the woman only to be threatened by the guards.
“I asked my staff to help, but they warned us that if we helped her they would beat us.”

Re: Phnom Penh sex worker presumed drowned after security guard chase.
By coincidence, there's an article in the PPP on the Daun Penh security guards today.
Are these are the very same security guys that were chasing a few women off the streets on Sunday ? In that case, they sure are geared up to protect themselves against those vicious sex-workers with their sharp finger-nails and high-heel shoes.
Interior Minister Sar Kheng yesterday defended the notoriously violent security guards employed by Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district to keep order and crack down on protests, saying they were necessary to help understaffed police...

That's a pretty dumb picture they used for the article. Those are all Gendarmerie Royale, other than the one "District Security Guard" in the blue outfit. Gendarmerie are Ministry of Defence. Sar Kheng, as stated, is Minister of Interior (Police).
Silence, exile, and cunning.

So who are the security guards? I've never noticed them. Guys in blue?

Yeah. Prior to the elections, that uniform was worn by what I'd describe as Park Wardens. It's a dark blue simple enough shirt & pants outfit, with a Naga Bridge arm patch. They'd stop people driving on the pavements on riverside and keep a bit of order in the newly refurbished park areas. During the elections those duties seemed to be abandoned and they took on a different role, that is assuming that they are even the same people. I don't.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Re: Phnom Penh sex worker presumed drowned after security guard chase.
Guards' chief Kim Vutha continues to deny that his guards were chasing a woman sex worker when she slipped and fell into the Tonle Sap river while jumping from boat to boat to escape them on Sunday night.
In an absolute, total denial of the events seen by witnesses, Vutha denies that the chase and the accident occurred, and he therefore refuses to investigate or to order a search for the body; since there was no chase and therefore no accident, there can be no body. Cynically, yesterday, he suggested that the woman was in fact off playing cards.
No Search for Missing Woman’s Body in River: Guard Chief

When an American expatriate fell into the Tonle Sap river from a tourist boat last month, authorities called in the navy. When a Cambodian sex worker apparently met the same fate on Sunday night, authorities did nothing.
Two days after witnesses told authorities that the woman hit her head and fell into the river as she tried to elude security guards, the guards’ chief said Phnom Penh authorities were not searching for her body because they lacked evidence that she fell in.
“We don’t have any firsthand information or clues about her fall into the river, so we can’t go directly and find her in the river,” said Kim Vutha, chief of the Daun Penh district security guards, on Tuesday. “We think she might have left for the provinces to escape from us.”
Witnesses, however, told authorities at the time that the woman, identified as Pen Kunthea by a local NGO, slipped while attempting to jump from one boat to another near the Wat Phnom tourist boat dock on Sunday night, hitting her head as she fell into the water. They said the missing woman and about four others were chased by Daun Penh guards...

Obviously the TOF thread on improving boats exit practices hasn't bore fruit yet.

Well, what about that then Vutha, you absolute fucking cunt. You utter spastic, if there was no chase why the fuck would the person who was not the object of a pursuit want to escape to the provinces from you? Using your own retarded 10 year old child logic, if there was no pursuit there can be no fugitive.said Kim Vutha, chief of the Daun Penh district security guards, on Tuesday. “We think she might have left for the provinces to escape from us.”
Sometimes I really, really miss being in Cambodia and can't wait to be back. Then I read shit like this...

Article is quite well written & compassionate. Starts by imploring great sympathy or pity, and criticizes the authorities practice of re-education camps and them not being concerned with the search.

I cannot access Facebook right now. But my Khmer friend in PP tells me there is a vid on Facebook in which one of the 4 Wat Phnom boom-boom girls involved speaks about what happened. Can anyone find it and post it?
