Seafood dealer arrested for imported injected shrimps
Border police in Kampot province seized nearly 300 kilograms of illegally imported shrimp injected with gelatin on Wednesday night, after finding similar adulteration in shrimp seized from the same seafood dealer last week.
Leng Vibol, chief of the Prek Chak International Checkpoint, told Khmer Times yesterday that the raid had been a collaboration between police and health inspectors.
“On Wednesday night, the CamControl officials seized in the raid 295 kilograms of shrimp that was found to be injected with gelatin inside the head and back,” he said, explaining that this had been done to increase their weight and boost their presentation. He said officials had been closely watching the imports of a Cambodian seafood dealer after her detention last week over importing “poor quality” products.
“This is second time for her that she violated the law after importing low quality shrimp from Vietnam,” he said.

Re: Seafood dealer arrested for imported injected shrimps
There was a Vietnamese sourced video doing the rounds a few weeks back about this on some Khmer FB news page. It's at the point now where most Vietnamese and Chinese food is suspect, along with some Cambodian and Thai, especially the processed stuff. They're greedy and unscrupulous as fuck! Growing up on an organic farm (tons of veggies in season, lots of varieties of patatoes etc. year round in storage, duck and chick eggs daily, lamb, apple trees, many types of berries and grapes grown and wild) etc., and buying stuff from neighbours and markets, never bothered much, so it's quite disconcerting when you need to analyse all of what you eat here nowadays.CEOCambodiaNews wrote:Border police in Kampot province seized nearly 300 kilograms of illegally imported shrimp injected with gelatin on Wednesday night, after finding similar adulteration in shrimp seized from the same seafood dealer last week.

http://althealthworks.com/11401/vietnam ... fityelena/The chemical in question, CMC or Carboxymethyl cellulose, is a “water-soluble anionic linear polymer” used as a food additive, as well as in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
CMC comes in different types: purified (food grade), technical grade and industrial. The food grade is 99.5% or higher, and is called cellulose gum. The FDA labeled it GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe), however no new studies have been done since 1970s to confirm that it is indeed harmless. What we currently know is that consuming large amounts of CMC can potentially lead to diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
Unfortunately, we do not know that the CMC Vietnam gets from China is food grade. Knowing that this whole scheme is to make money, it is quite likely that many vendors will order the cheapest CMC they can find; industrial grade is twice cheaper than food grade, and it is 50-90% pure. It contains large amounts of sodium chloride and sodium glycolate. These two ingredients are not recommended for people with heart problems, high blood pressure, and sodium-sensitivity.

Re: Seafood dealer arrested for imported injected shrimps
Another load of injected shrimps from Vietnam were seized in Kampot on Thursday 22 June 2017.
Doctored shrimps destroyed
About 400 kilograms of shrimps were yesterday confiscated and destroyed after being imported from Vietnam through Kampot’s Prek Chak International Border Checkpoint.
Sar Sorin, chief of the provincial Fisheries Administration, said his officials and military police had detained a car containing seafood including crabs, octopus and 21 cases of shrimp from Vietnam on Wednesday.
Checks from CamControl officials found the shrimps had been injected with carboxymethyl cellulose, or cellulose gum, to plump them up and increase their weight.
“After being injected, the shrimps’ weight increases by about 20 percent,” he said, adding the chemical could cause vomiting, diarrhoea and headaches to those who cooked with or consumed it...

Re: Seafood dealer arrested for imported injected shrimps
When I was living in Vietnam approx 3 years ago, I remember reading reports of big foreign investment in shrimp farms in the Mekong Delta, especially around CauMau. Eventually reports of the shrimp being too low a standard to export began, with the Vietnamese farmers being all angry and outraged. But, they were doing dodgey shit to the shrimp. In some ways, Vietnam suffers from the same problems as Cambodia.CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Sat Jun 24, 2017 11:04 pm Another load of injected shrimps from Vietnam were seized in Kampot on Thursday 22 June 2017.

Glad to see they found a market for their dodgey shrimp, and managed to increase it's size.
Note it was not a Viet importing and selling it though.

Imported Vietnamese prawns with white spot disease being used as bait has devastated the industry in Queensland. There was corruption with importers supplying authorities with samples of clean prawns and then importing large quantities unchecked.
