Looking for this man - Gary Haines
Hi everyone. I am looking for this man, he is a dear friend to me. We met last year in Cambodia. He is about 62-63 years old, and i know he is from Minnesota, USA. I've been trying to get in touch with for a long time. Today i found someone on Facebook who knows him, and they told me he had died in Phnom Penh. I am just looking to confirm this horrible news, or see if someone on here would recognize him or know him. He would frequent the Red Fox bar on St. 136 quite often. Thanks for any help anyone may be able to provide.

Come on. Are you really "friends" or does he owe you money?

Good friends. He is like a father to me, but i lost contact with him after coming back to Canada. And today i asked someone from Charlie Harpers in Sihanoukville if they had seen him around, and i was told he died in Phnom Penh. Just trying to find a friend man.

Fair enough. Is there any reason you doubt this mutual friend who has already answered your question?lookingforGary wrote:Good friends. I don't mean to come off too skeptical, but I hope you can see I'm helping your friend out by being a little cautious when someone comes by wanting to know people's whereabouts.
Imagine if we all scrambled to provide as much info as possible about someone every time someone else said "I'm a friend, tell me everything you know about the person I'm looking for..."
And did this guy at Charlie Harper's mention how he died or how he knows about it?
We can try to decipher some local news to see if he's made an appearance.
It's late here now, almost 3am, so only debaucherous drunks such as myself are around, and maybe a few tweakers at GSM.
Best bet is wait for another 4 hours when it's 7am here, and that's when all the responsible expats with adult jobs should be getting up and might be able to help you out.

Re: Looking for this man - Gary Haines
Thanks General. Got confirmation from more than 1 person that he has passed away. Shitty news. Guess that explains why he hasn't answered his phone since January. Apparently he died in his sleep in February in his hotel room somewhere in PP. Not sure what hotel he was at. And i haven't been able to find any news articles about him, which is rather strange since he died in Cambodia. His hat is hanging behind the counter at Charlie Harpers. Rather fitting place for it. RIP Gary, you will be missed.

GM,
Take it from me, Gary would not need to owe anyone money.
You probably met him at Charlie Harpers bar a few years ago when you visited.

Thanks for the information John. I really do appreciate it. Gary had actually introduced us a few times when we stopped by your place for breakfastLaudJohn wrote:lookingforGary wrote:Thanks General. If anyone that comes across this and knew Gary, has any information on how to contact any of his family in America, could you please let me know. Would like to send them some pictures of him, as I know they probably don't have any recent ones. Thank you.

"I am very sorry to confirm my dear friend gary did pass away, he slipped and hit his head in the bathroom at the lux hotel, myself and two girls from red fox were the last to hold his hands as he was on the respirator, doctor told me there was nothing they could do due to lack of oxygen to the brain and were awaiting the man from the embassy to come and to switch ventilator off, was devastated, am now talking about it, he knew we were there though, our good brother put the picture up off him in red fox, he was a legend, will always be missed and rememberd."
This is what I have found out. Basically the worst possible outcome. Breaks my heart to learn of this. I am speechless.
One bright thing I've found in all of this, if you check out Charlie Harper's on Google Street view, you can see Gary sitting outside wearing his cowboy hat. That was where I met the man, the legend. Wish I had the chance to speak to him again. You will be missed greatly Gary, R.I.P.
