According to court documents, Brig. Gen. Chitra’s assistant, Sam Bon, allegedly used Brig. Gen. Chitra’s Toyota Camry to transport a large amount of luxury timber from Preah Vihear to Phnom Penh on December 1, with the intention of selling the wood to furniture shops.

Once in the capital, Mr. Bon contacted Mr. Vannak, as the men were friends, and asked him to find furniture shops which would buy the wood. After deciding on a shop in Boeung Trabek commune, the men traveled there together, selling the wood on the night of December 2, and then went to a nightclub for drinks.

While drinking at the club, Mr. Vannak borrowed the car from Mr. Bon to go for a drive with his friends. But after getting the key from Mr. Bon, he took the car and pawned it for $1,000 from NagaWorld casino.

Mr. Bon later called his boss to report what Mr. Vannak had done. Brig. Gen. Chitra then filed a complaint with the national Military Police for intervention.

Mr. Vannak could not be reached for comment yesterday.

During his trial last month, he denied the allegations against him, saying it was Mr. Bon who had pawned the car. Mr. Bon was never arrested or charged by the court.
