Rare monkey sighted in remote forest.
http://www.khmertimeskh.com/news/24674/ ... in-forest/This was the first time red-shanked doucs have been sighted in Siem Pang, which was designated as a protected area in 2014. The 67,000 hectare forest is in one of the remotest areas of Cambodia, with few motorbike paths or human settlements.
Some experts believe it could be one of the last bastions of the endangered red-shanked douc and its close relative, the critically endangered grey-shanked douc...
Shortly after his red-shanked douc sighting during last week’s trip into Siem Pang forest, Mr. Loveridge saw the results of illegal poaching first-hand.
“We had heard a lot of gunfire in the forest,” he said. “A lot of AK-47s going off. The next day we found a red-shanked douc that had been shot. It was very sad to see a beautiful group of them alive, and a few days later to find one that’s been shot and eaten by maggots.”
Bastards.

Re: Rare monkey sighted in remote forest.
I was in Siem Pang a couple of years ago and we were kept awake all night by the gun fire. Goes to show what protected areas in Cambodia are worth.

Was the monkey reunited with the computer he uses to submit to K440?

Re: Rare monkey sighted in remote forest.
thats because mother nature didnt invent guns, these monkeys are not top of the food chain but not many animals could get to them because they are agile and they lived on top of trees, so they develop red fur to show their dominance and attract matesSinnSisamouth wrote:what a stupid looking monkey!

Re: Rare monkey sighted in remote forest.
Now for some good news:
A second pair of endangered pileated gibbons released into the forest near Angkor Wat last year have had a baby.
The Apsara Authority posted news of the recently arrived baby on its website over the weekend.
Wildlife Alliance director of rescue care and release Nick Marx said the organisation had tried to keep the news quiet, as the first weeks of a newborn’s life were “a delicate time”.
“With so much bad news in the world, it’s understandable that people would want to share this bit of good news,” reasoned Marx, who added that the gender of the newborn would not be clear for at least four years.
“You can’t tell until it reaches maturity – if the colour turns black, it’s a male; if it stays brown, it’s female,” he said...
