Yeah, but it hasn't worked out that well so far in Sihanoukville and they would never want to give the admission that it's a real problem in the capitol by putting up signs.

• Media: The free tourist maps of Phnom Penh, and ad-heavy brochures and freesheets on what to do, see and eat, could include warnings on areas to avoid at night and how to secure belongings against would-be thieves. The official Cambodia tourism site could include a multilingual section on crime and safety rather than continue to avoid the issue.

• Local intelligence: As tourists and expats are often reminded by drivers, tuk-tuks and motos are omnipresent in popular areas. They also have “beats”, streets and corners they return to. In terms of local intelligence, no one is better placed to keep an eye open for suspicious activity. Except for the tiny fraction that is complicit in the problem, security is in their own interest. With so many streets already being watched, it might be useful to make use of this resource, by asking them to report their findings to police.

"tiny fraction"... seems optimistic and likely the reverse of the reality.

• Hotline. A telephone number or a website could be set up where people can report thefts, suspicious activity and suspected collusion.

So that the police can then charge the tourist and do nothing... which is what happens when they report them now.


I love how all of these suggestions avoid the suggestion that the police actually crack down and do their jobs...

Why would they? What's in it for them? Until basic structural issues are addressed they'll never be more than they already are. Debating those issues here seems pretty pointless; we have no say or influence in the matter.

As to "Why should they?" because it's their fucking job. You don't take a job that doesn't pay what it should for the job... and if you take a job, you do it.

If the pay is shit, stop taking those jobs for shit pay and they'll start upping the pay to get people to take the jobs.

For 5 months, I managed 'The Cove Beach Bungalows" on Serendipity beach ( not Occheuteal you ignorant fuks, to the WEST of the pier is Serendipity, to the EAST is Occheuteal. Just sayn). EVERY day, Nick from Above Us Only Sky, Scouser from Cloud 9 and me would warn people not to take their shit around the point with them and to leave it with us in our lock boxes. You should have seen some of the looks we got. Like - Leave it with YOU? I've heard about these scams .... etcetcetc LOL. EVERY FUKN DAY at least 1 person we warned would come back in tears because their shit got stolen - when they left it unattended on the little cove in the middle of nowhere and went for a swim. EVERY FUKN DAY. "My passport, Iphone, ipad,camera, $$$$$.Why don't the police do anything?
My question is - why should the police look after complete and utter GUMBIES?

1 quick example. An older bloke, around New Years, was walking with an obvious camera bag around his neck towards the point. First Nick warned him. then I did, then Jon did. He ignored us completely. 20 minutes or so later he came running back with blood pissing out of his nose. They stole his camera, he tried to stop them and copped a smack to the face. "FUKN CAMBODIAN SCUM, I HATE THIS PLACE AND WILL TELL EVERYONE NEVER TO COME HERE" After me and my staff calmed him down and cleaned him up, I asked him where he was from. 'ROME, this would NEVER happen there" He didn't even have the good manners to look embarrassed when I told him my 73 year old mum had her nose broken in a bag snatching in Rome 3 months before. AND the cops did fukn NOTHIING and wanted a bribe to even write a report for insurance.
I really think we all need to get a little perspective here, before we start knocking the Cambodian cops. How are YOUR cops back at home? Lily White and Squeaky clean? Paid a SHITLOAD better, for doing fuck all? Seems to me thats what we all complained about "back there"
I will pull up (to tired now, in the next couple of days perhaps) the Gold Coast Bulletin link from last month where the 3 top cops in Australia's 7th largest city just got busted for, among other things, dealing Coke in trafficable quantities.

I never thought you to be naive until I read that mate. You have never taken an underpaid job because you had to and then just put in the minimum effort? You have refused jobs that were underpaid, even when you needed it to feed your 5 kids, on principle, so that in the future the pay would increase for others?
In that case you're a better man then me Gunga - Din. Or you have never been in a truly desperate situation.
I reckon I know which is the correct assumption.

No, I haven't. I've taken underpaid jobs and still done the job... because that's what I agreed to do. It's called a work ethic. I don't go above and beyond, but I do the job I agreed to do. And suggesting it's acceptable for people to do otherwise and it should be "expected" is pretty shitty really. You make a commitment to do a job, for a wage, then do it or quit so someone else who WILL actually do the job for that wage can fill your shoes.
