One Seriously Injured In Gunshot at StarMart In Chamkarmon District

Phnom Penh: Police said there was a gun firing at StarMart at the gasoline station in Bokor traffic light located in Chamkarmon district which left one person seriously injured. Police are intervening the case.

Phnom Penh, According to Koh Santepheap Daily News, a famous social and political analyst was shot dead by anonymous in a starmart around 9:10 am on 10 July 2016. A suspect was arrested.

Popular Political Analyst Kem Ley Shot Dead

Kem Ley, a popular political commentator and frequent critic of Prime Minister HE, was shot dead at a Phnom Penh gas station on Sunday morning, according to military police.

Eng Hy, spokesman for the National Military Police, said Kem Ley was identified by officers at the scene.

“According to reports we just received, it’s Kem Ley,” he said. “He is dead.”

Mr. Hy declined to answer further questions about the case.

Officers at the scene—a convenience shop at the Caltex gas station at the intersection of Monivong Boulevard and Mao Tse Toung boulevards—said the shooting happened at about 9 a.m. and that the shooter had fled the scene and remained at large.

A longtime analyst of Cambodia’s fractious political scene, Kem Ley founded the grassroots Khmer for Khmer advocacy group in 2014 with the aim of helping spark the formation of localized political parties across the country.

Cambodia Daily update - shooter arrested.

Kirth Chantharith, spokesman for the National Police, said at about 10:30 a.m. that officers had already arrested a man over the shooting.

“Police made an arrest immediately after the shooting happened,” he said, declining to give any further information.

Police Sent The Gunman to the Police Station

Phnom Penh" According to Koh Santepheap Daily News, around 11:00 am on 10 July 2016, police sent the gunman who shot dead Dr. Kem Ley to police station in Phnom Penh for further legal action.

The gunman said that his name is Chub Samlab [means Kill Whenever Meet] and he said that the reason that he killed Dr. Kem Ley because Dr. Kem Ley owed him 3000 USD and didn't pay him back.

The wife of Dr. Kem Ley, Bo Rathana, 35 years old couldn't reach for comment. At the police station in Chamkarmon district, she said before Dr. Kem Ley was shot dead, he brought her and their kid to the market and then he drew the car alone to the gas station to drink coffee as usual where he was shot dead by the gunman.
