Banteay Meanchey Governor Kousoum Saroeuth said Sunday that approximately 10,000 Cambodians made the trip back to Thailand with the requisite paperwork in hand last week.

Some local officials have reported that returnees who were tired of waiting for the necessary documentation had headed back to the border with plans to cross into Thailand again illegally. But Mr. Saroeuth said he was confident they would not get through.

I wonder how they can tell illegal workers from Cambodian tourists? Like if my wife and I were to head over, would they tell her to fuck off?

LOL, true story, we were in Bangkok, and we go to buy some street food, and the guy cooking starts speaking to my wife in Thai...she says she's Khmer, and he laughs and says..'So am I'.

does she have a passport?
if she goes she will be stamped in
ie she is legal

She does, but Cambodians previously didn't need a passport to enter Thailand for short trips, only an ID card. Same with Vietnam. And same the other direction. All based on reciprocal agreements.

To be specific, this is how a LOT of the stuff in the markets gets "imported" from Thailand. Ride that cheap train from Bangkok to Poipet sometime and you'll see it. A bunch of Khmer ride it into Bangkok, stock up on stuff, then bring it all back to Cambodia. Since it's their "luggage" they are able to get it through pretty cheap (or even free) at the border and then resell it here. Meaning if they bar that process (most of those people won't have passports, but will be using the temporary thing) it will likely have an impact on businesses and prices here.

Legally they are only allowed in the border area with an id card ( same for thai's going to Cambodia or Laos) any further an if ur stopped ur fucked.

Think about it, with only an id card they would have no way of knowing how long you were there. I have seen Malaysians entering Thailand with papers that are stamped ( not passports) and there allowed in for 1 day but need be back out by night, Perhaps Cambodians get issued the same

With passport they get FREE 14 days visa exempt stamp same as thai's going to Cambodia.

How would the border police tell the difference between a migrant worker and the wife of a western man?

PHUKET: Human-trafficking brokers operating on the island are to be cut out of the migrant-labor supply chain under a new system being put in place at the Phuket Provincial Employment Office (PPEO).

“If any business in Phuket needs more Cambodian laborers, for example, they can apply at the PPEO and we will contact offices in Sa Kaeo, Surin, Trat and Chantha Buri to recruit those workers,” explained PPEO Chief Yaowapa Pibulpol.

Cambodians wanting to work in the Kingdom can submit their applications to these employment offices for free, she added.
