Dengue Cases on the Rise
Dengue cases, which can be highly lethal to children, rose phenomenally in the first five months this year and more than doubled compared with the same period last year.

The Ministry of Health, in a statement released yesterday said that from January to May this year there were 1,915 cases and four deaths. Last year, the ministry said, there were 567 cases with one death.

The statement said dengue cases normally peaked after a cycle lasting three to five years and this year more cases are expected due to the abnormally high atmospheric temperatures associated with intense El Nino events.

Health Minister Dr. Mam Bunheng urged Cambodians to exercise strict caution during the rainy season to prevent themselves from being bitten by the Aedes mosquito that carries the dengue virus.

In the statement, Dr. Bunheng said parents should ensure the surroundings of their houses were kept clean and all mosquito breeding areas destroyed to eliminate the Aedes larva. This is to prevent children from getting dengue, he said in the statement.

Children are susceptible to dengue and often succumb to dengue hemorrhagic fever if there is a delay in seeking help from health centers or hospitals. There is no treatment for dengue and generally the fever resolves on its own with the help of intravenous fluids.

“Please rush your child to the nearest health center if he or she has high fever because dengue can kill,” said the minister.

Dr. Bunheang said the larvacide Abate was the most effective in eliminating the Aedes mosquito in its breeding sites, with the Abate pellets put in water jars and containers – the mosquito’s favorite breeding places.

Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health Dr. Eng Huot issued a directive letter to all provincial and city health department directors to take action in preventing dengue outbreaks.
He said in the letter that “there was a significant increase of dengue cases in Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Kandal, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear and Phnom Penh as well.”

Dengue fever kills 18 children in Cambodia in 9 months
15/10/2016 12:29
PHNOM PENH, Oct. 15 (FN) — Dengue fever had claimed 18 children's lives in Cambodia during the first nine months of 2016, down 44 percent over the same period last year, according to a report on Saturday.

Some 10,587 dengue fever cases were reported during the Jan. -Sept. period this year, a decrease of 3.3 percent compared to 10, 949 cases over the same period last year, Huy Rekol, director of the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, said in the report posted on the center's website.

"The incidence rate is 63.9 cases out of 100,000 people," he said, adding that over 71 percent of the patients were children aged between 5 and 14 years old.

"The situation of dengue fever in Cambodia is at a controllable level because this figure is still below the alarming line," he said.

Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted through the bite of an Aedes mosquito which is a day-biting mosquito. Its symptoms include sudden onset of high fever which can last from 3 to 7 days, severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, and rash.

In Cambodia, the outbreak of the virus is usually in the rainy season from May to October.

Interesting that the OP (posted in June) reported that the number of Dengue cases had doubled compared to the same period last year (Jan - May). Now, the figures for Jan - Sep show a decrease of 44% compared to last year.

Why is it so?

War on dengue
22 May 2017
About 350 tonnes of the insecticide Abate have been distributed across the country to kill the mosquitos which cause dengue fever. The insecticide went out on Friday of last week to be put in water jars to kill larvae.

In the first three months of this year, there were 510 cases of dengue fever, a fall of 62 percent on the same period last year, the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control reported.
The centre said the incidence was 3.1 out of 100,000 people. There had been no fatality this year.

Abate is distributed twice yearly: before the rainy season, after Khmer New Year, and between August and September.
