Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. 33,000 Cambodian workers to be sent to Qatar.

Post by Anchor Moy »

Despite repeated reports of the appalling conditions of migrant workers in Qatar ...
Cambodia has agreed to send 33,000 workers to Qatar for a variety of projects ahead of the 2022 World Cup, which will be held in the Gulf state’s capital of Doha...

Qatar continues to receive a barrage of criticism for the way they are building up their country ahead of the World Cup. Amnesty International and a litany of news outlets have written detailed reports on the appalling conditions workers are forced to live in and the blatant disrespect for workers’ rights.

Qatar has more than 1.7 million migrant workers, with 3,200 of them specifically working on Khalifa Stadium, which will hold the opening ceremony of the soccer tournament.

Migrant workers have described managers who routinely pay them less than what was agreed upon or withhold wages outright, lock away passports so workers are unable to leave the country, “appalling” living conditions and substandard healthcare for workers in physically demanding positions.

In a BBC report from 2015, one worker, when asked about the situation for migrant workers in Qatar, said: “There is nobody to fight for us. For almost two months now, my company has refused to pay our salaries. Our company is killing us because they don’t want to give us the little reward we deserve.”

Just wondering if the "appalling conditions" for migrant construction workers in Qatar are much worse than here in Cambodia ? As was said in another thread, many construction workers here live on their building sites in terrible conditions, they work without safety standards, and they are poorly paid and not compensated for work-related injury.

If modern day slavery really was the issue for those CNN parrots who claim to be against 'modern day slavery,' things like this would be top on thier list. But it's not, and so it's not.

Agreed. Next time you are up for a Sunday drive have a look behind the complex on top of Victory Hill. The ruskie built complex with the aero-plane on top.
Sad, sad, sad. But they have a Poland China ( i think) & a brown cow. Shelter & running water.

Better yet go into the gift shop first.

I can see some people rubbing their hands together with glee and counting their money already. But it's not the workers it's the people who signed the agreement and their human recruitment companies, that will charge the workers for managing the process of passports , travel and filling out all the details on the application.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
