2 More Nauru Asylum Seekers Volunteer For Cambodia

Two asylum-seekers detained on Nauru have reportedly volunteered for resettlement in Cambodia, as a young woman evacuated from the Pacific island remained in hospital with critical injuries after setting herself alight in protest.

Only two of the five asylum-seekers who opted to leave Nauru for a new life in Cambodia last year remain there, eight months after the start of a resettlement deal that cost Australia $55 million.

Kerm Sarin, the administration chief of the Cambodian Interior Ministry’s immigration department, said Australia had advised Cambodia of two new volunteers, although they had not yet submitted formal applications.

“Australia has informed us that two more people have volunteered to come to Cambodia,” Mr Sarin said, according to The Cambodia Daily.

“This is only unofficial information from Australia, and we have not yet received any official letter.
