Cambodia mulls Preah Vihear access from Thailand
Cambodia mulls Preah Vihear access from Thailand
Cambodia is considering allowing visitors from Thailand directly access Preah Vihear temple, Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Bahn said on Thursday.
Phnom Penh shut down the entrance to the Hindu ruins from Si Sa Ket's Kantharalak district in 2007 due to border conflicts in the area claimed by both countries. The row was culminated in a legal battle at the World Court in The Hague.
Visitors from Thailand can go as far as Pha Mor E-daeng cliff at Khao Phra Viharn National Park in the district bordering Cambodia to see the Unesco World Heritage site from afar, although tourists can reach the temple from the Cambodian side.

Gen Tea Bahn said after a meeting of the General Border Committee with Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon at the Thai Defence Ministry that the two governments were already in talks to reopen access from the Thai border. But the Cambodian minister did not give a timeframe for the conclusion of the negotiations on the issue.
Gen Prawit said a chance for tourists from Thailand to travel to the temple from the Thai province now was possible due to warmer relations between the two countries.
Thailand and Cambodia are celebrating 65 years of diplomatic ties this year.

Re: Cambodia mulls Preah Vihear access from Thailand
I hope they allow this. The view from the Thai side is absolutely spectacular and it's a shame for people to be denied the view and the temple in a single, simple trip. It might also help ease hurt pride on the Thai side of the border over the whole affair.

Ministry denies talk of reopening Thai access to Preah Vihear temple
A defense Ministry spokesman yesterday denied Thai media reports that Cambodian Minister of Defence Tea Banh had discussed the potential reopening of access to Preah Vihear temple from the Thai side of the border during recent talks.
Asked to respond to an article in the Bangkok Post that said Banh had acknowledged preparations were under way to reopen passage from Thailand’s Sisaket province – which was closed in 2009 amid military skirmishes around the contested 11th-century temple – Defence Ministry spokesman Chhum Socheat maintained the report was inaccurate.
“I would like to confirm that the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Tea Banh did not talk at all about the Preah Vihear temple issue during the meeting in Thailand, even during the press conference. The report by the media was not true,” Socheat said.
“Both Cambodia and Thailand discussed the upgrading of international border-crossing checkpoints in some other areas, but not Preah Vihear.”
Banh and counterpart Prawit Wongsuwon met last week in Bangkok for the 11th General Border Committee meeting.
The talks focused on military cooperation and maintaining peace along the border, fighting terrorism and piracy and natural disaster preparations, according to a Facebook post by Banh.
Relations between the countries have improved steadily in recent months, as it approaches five years since end of deadly border clashes over the ownership of Preah Vihear temple.
