Teacher Accused of Raping Pupil

A high school teacher in Kratie province has been charged with raping one of his students after a party for teachers and students on Monday, a Sambor district police officer said yesterday.

The teacher was arrested on Tuesday after the 17-year-old girl’s parents filed a complaint, said the officer, who asked not to be named.

He identified the suspect as Sandan High School teacher Chiv Chantha, 26, and said he was arrested at his home on Tuesday.

“I do not know whether they had a love affair or not, but the [student’s] parents sued,” the officer said. “Their complaint said the suspect took their daughter to a hotel on Monday after the party,” the officer said, adding that he had raped her three times.

“The victim told her mother that the teacher sweet talked her to go out with him and then took her to the hotel and raped her,” the officer said.

He referred further questions to Sambor district police chief Chhin Sambo, who could not be reached for comment yesterday.

The number of reported rape cases rose to 253 last year from 226 in 2014, according to the Ministry of Interior.
