Another news source reported that they actually fainted because one worker collapsed in a seizure, and somembody said "electric shock".
Seems like a handy way to get a day off/ give their union bosses some leverage. That sounds cynical, but so be it.

Possibly a hysteria response after the first one went down (think Beatles groupies)...

Sure, i'd believe that. The response could possibly have been strengthened by the fact it was the day before the holidays!

First thing I thought of too Jerr. Plus it might be a way to "protest" conditions. It's not a difficult problem to deal with. Honking big fans, water sprinkling on the roof or maybe white paint the metal roof. Kook eze works wonders and I know the Thai's have something similar. Of course insulating the roof would help but, wow, big money. One time.

A few weeks after this OP, another episode like this in a garment factory, with 1 dead and 18 "faintings". I doubt that the death was due to hysteria. The factory has been closed and an investigation opened.
...Five female workers at the Or Sambath Trading factory reported dizziness, vomiting and difficulty breathing on Thursday before passing out, said Duk Kanthor, district governor where the factory is located in eastern Prey Veng province.
They were sent to a hospital, where a 21-year-old worker later died, he said. On Friday, 14 more workers fell ill with similar symptoms before passing out and being taken to a hospital, he said...
