South African Expat JOSHUA BRYCE Robbed While Sleeping on Phnom Penh Street
South African expat's Phone Stolen While Sleeping on Phnom Penh Street
[CAMBODIA NEWS] A South African Expat fell victim to theft in Phnom Penh's Boeung Keng Kang district after falling asleep on the street following a late-night drinking session. The incident occurred on March 16, 2025, with police later apprehending the suspect and recovering the stolen items.

A 29-year-old South African expat, JOSHUA BRYCE, had his phone, passport, and $50 stolen while sleeping in front of a clothing store in Phnom Penh's Boeung Keng Kang district. The suspect, identified as Sok Tit, a 25-year-old Cambodian waste collector, was later arrested by local authorities.
According to police reports, the incident occurred after the victim took a tuk-tuk from the riverside area around 7:30 PM on March 15. Upon finding his guesthouse fully booked, he visited a nearby mart where he consumed six cans of beer. Feeling drowsy, he fell asleep in front of the OQB7 clothing store on Street 57 corner of Street 302.
When the victim awoke around 4 AM the following morning, he discovered his phone, passport, and approximately $50 in cash were missing. He immediately filed a report with the Boeung Keng Kang 1 police post.
Police reviewed security camera footage and identified the suspect, who was seen approaching on a bicycle with a waste collection cart. All stolen items were successfully recovered and returned to the victim.

The cans of beer were a solution to finding another guesthouse..the victim took a tuk-tuk from the riverside area around 7:30 PM on March 15. Upon finding his guesthouse fully booked, he visited a nearby mart where he consumed six cans of beer. Feeling drowsy, he fell asleep in front of the OQB7 clothing store on Street 57 corner of Street 302.

Let's do some victim bashing, this victim seems to deserve it. Here we go:
- Why did this mug take his passport to a drinking session?
- If you have $50 left after a night of drinking, you didn't drink enough yet and should have partied on.

The victim arrived in Cambodia Nov last year to try and get a job as a TEFL'er....surely he should know by now that it's not wise to be carrying your passport around, and never wise to fall asleep drunk on the streets (must've been much more than 6 beers). Hopefully he's learnt a valuable lesson.
Well done to the competent authorities for their swift action in locating and apprehending the thief and recovering the stolen items.
One very lucky Saffer, difficult and time consuming for them to get a new passport.

Stealing the passport is a dick move from the robber (and he can be sure the victim will go to the police station after doing that)
This new robber generation has lost their last shred of ethics in its work :p

Maybe the victim had one of those gay man purses where he kept all his stuff inside. Do you expect a robber to go through item by item to decide what to keep and what to leave behind?velvet_thunder wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 11:56 am Stealing the passport is a dick move from the robber (and he can be sure the victim will go to the police station after doing that)

If those robbers were smart, they would run a scam center and steal bitcoins from the comfort of an air-conditioned office instead of robbing drunk people in the street at great risk to themselves.
