Herd of Cows Dies from Presumed Poisoning

Cambodia News, (Kampong Speu Province): According to a report from Kampong Speu officials, a herd of 7 cows who were released to graze naturally around a village in Oral district were found dead, after disappearing all night, and not returning home as usual. .

According to the report, the owner of the cows was known and lived in Thmey village, Ta Sal commune, Oral district, Kampong Speu province, lost his cattle on the evening of March 19, 2023 and found their carcasses on March 20, 2023 at a nearby cassava plantation. According to a local villager at the scene, the dead cows were already stinking and not good to eat.

In relation to the above case, Mr. Vy Samnang, Governor of Kampong Speu Province, responded that the vetinary team which was sent to investigate, concluded that the cows had eaten the plantation cassava just after it was sprayed with pesticides

Agriculture officials also urged people to pay attention to their roaming livestock to in order to avoid bad incidents such as this one.

What the heck do they spray the cassava with? Cyanide?

I think something went wrong with the translation here, AFAIK cassava has been harvested and farmers are waiting for the start of the rainy season to plant again.

It's more likely that the cows became poisoned from eating the fresh cassava - which does cause cyanide poisoning @hanno
Feeding of fresh cassava root to animals is restricted because it contains hydrocyanic acid at a high level, which is the origin for poisoning. High levels of hydrocyanic acid from fresh cassava root could be detoxified by sulfur addition to become nontoxic to cattle.

There's not really a harvest season for cassavas, it can be harvested all year long. You still can see cassavas plantation everywhere in the kingdom now, late march.
I doubt pesticides have been sprayed for the cassavas, i guess that was to clean the land / kill the grass (then eaten by the cows).
