Defendant Appeals Conviction for Kratie Family Massacre and Burning Evidence

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): The Phnom Penh Municipal Court of Appeal this morning, December 6, 2022, held a hearing on the case of a man convicted of killing a family and then destroying the corpses by burning down the house to eliminate evidence, on the night of August 9, 2018 at Phum B'Ea, Thmey commune, Chit Borey district, Kratie province.
In a barbaric attack, a couple and their two young children were murdered in cold blood, before being set on fire.

Judge Kim Dany, the presiding judge, said in court that the accused was identified as In Sokly, a 59-year-old male farmer. Judge Dany stated that in this case, In Sokly and four other defendants have been sentenced by the Kratie Provincial Court on 5 February 2020 to life imprisonment for "premeditated murder" under the provisions of Articles 29 and 200 of the Penal Code of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The other 4 accomplices convicted for the massacre are not appealing their sentences:
1. Name: Chak No, male, 50 years old, living in Phum B'ear, Khum Thmey, Chit Borey District, Kratie Province,
2. Name: Mao Nhanh, male, 17 years old, living in Phnom Penh, Occupation: Security guard, Hanuman Mean Company Rith,
3-Name Chak Mao, male, 46 years old, living in B'Ear village, Thmey commune, Chit Borey district, Kratie province;
4 - Not named

The four murder victims are:
1. Chhom Chhean, 30 years old (husband),
2. Chuon Sokneang (wife), 36 years old,
3. Chhean Phimsey, male, 11 years old (son)
4-Chhean Vanny, female, 9 years old (daughter).
All four of them, parents and children, lived on Koh Prem, B'Ear village, Thmey commune, Chit Borey district, Kratie province. RIP.

The accused was arrested on August 14, 2018 in P'ear village, Thmey commune, Chit Borey district, Kratie province.
In the case of this criminal case, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court of Appeal postponed the announcement of the verdict until the morning of January 5, 2023.

Can't see what's around the car but having a convicted murderer on a life sentence sitting uncuffed next to a guy holding a gun seems a bit odd.

The photo probably dates from the moment of the perp's arrest in 2018, but the article doesn't specify the date.

He's old and sick ? He misses his family ? Doesn't like the prison rice ? :unknown:

UPDATE: Appeal Denied!
Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On January 6, 2023, the Court of Appeal Phnom Penh confirmed the life sentence of En Sokly, a 59-year-old man from Thmey village, Chet Borey district, Kratie province, for the murder of a family of four people, and tampering with the evidence by burning them in the house in Ba'ear village, Thmey commune, Chet Borey district, Kratie province in August 9, 2018.

The 4 other defendents in the case, who did not appeal, were Cheuk Nu, a 50-year-old man from Ba'ear village, Thmey commune, Chet Borey district, Kratie province, Mao Nhanh, a 17-year-old boy from Phnom Penh, Cheuk Mao, a 46-year-old man from Ba'ear village, Thmey commune, Chet Borey district, Kratie province, and Cheuk Lemsreng, a 20-year-old man from Ba'ear village, Thmey commune, Chet Borey district, Kratie province.
The five men were arrested on August 14, 2018, and they were sentenced to life in prison by the First Instant Court of Kratie province on February 5, 2020.

The defendents were found guilty of killing a couple and their two children before setting their house on fire to dispose of the bodies : Chhom Chhean, a 30-year-old man, Choun Sokneang, 36-year-old wife, Chhean Pheumsey, an 11-year-old son, and Chhean Vanny, a 9-year-old daughter.
