Cambodia ratifies UN nuclear ban treaty
By NHK World -
January 24, 2021

The United Nations says Cambodia ratified a treaty banning nuclear weapons on Friday, becoming the 52nd party to take the step.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons took effect on Friday having reached 50 ratifications by last October. It considers the development, manufacture, possession and use of nuclear weapons to be violations of international law.

Well, that's a relief.

:beer3: all round...

Can they have a UN Treaty on the mandatory use of garbage dumpsters and garbage trucks to collect them? Plus road cleansing?

I bet they wouldn't sign that.

Not likely. Reminds me of one of the best bumper stickers of all time. Remember them? Its what we had before internet memes. " Forget world peace. Visualize using your turn signals"

It’s easy to mock or be cynical, but just look at North Korea for an example of a desperately poor country turning to nukes in an attempt to punch above their weight.

None of the 54 countries that have ratified it have any nuclear weapons. None of those who do have them will ever ratify it.

It is hard not to be cynical of it.

The League of Nations (forerunner of the United Nations) outlawed war and nationalistic aggressions.

The only thing that has kept major world powers from openly going to war with one another since World War 2 has been nuclear mutual assured destruction. No sane leader wants to fight a war that they will lose. Likewise, all these small countries live in loose alliances with the major powers, depending on their nuclear protection as a deterrence.

Before World War 2, wars among major powers happened pretty frequently. Small countries became battlefields.

I bet there are countries who would like to offload some nuclear waste, just looking out for who may take care of it for a while.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
