Battambang Dam Progress

Battambang, Cambodia News: A new dam construction, located on Sanke river near Prek Tarang village, just below the city of Battambang, is 50% completed, according to Chan Yutha, Spokesman and Secretary of Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology. The construction of the Ta Moeun Sangker Dam began in June 2018 and is expected to be completed at the end of 2021. The project, costing $41M, is financed by South Korea and the Cambodian government.

The new dam is to be used to provide drinking water for Battambang city, as well as irrigation for 15,000 hectares of paddy rice fields and farmland. A number of irrigation canals are included in the project.

I know little about this dam except that it will block two of the major local tributaries into the Tonle Sap lake.
With the catastrophic effects of the Mekong dams just about to arrive - anything else that contributes to the degradation of the Great Lake's natural system has to be a big negative. on the face of it.

The increased contaminated agricultural runoff, and the increased polluted urban wastewater, that this dam will generate will be flowing into a very shallow and much diminished lake.
Not to mention the totally changed flow regime, another blow for the lake's natural system in itself.
Not good.

Reminder - the Tonle Sap produces about 2/3 of Cambodia's protein - and that is not easily replaceable from any source that most Cambodians will be able to afford.
Not sure what the answer is tho' - cities need water, and food to be grown nearby.

Actulaly it will be the chinese. no need for this damn when they block of the mekong as all the water will be drunk before its full

The water from this dam flows toward the Mekong after the Tonle sap and in dry season doesn't flow a lot. Dams are certainly always win on one hand lose on another. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Oops, pun. For Battambang it will be a good thing, I think.
