Police Launch Two-Day Raids on Kirivong Marijuana Plantations

Two arrested and several hundred marijuana plants destroyed in Takeo

Police in Takeo’s province’s Kirivong district arrested two suspects who were allegedly cultivating marijuana and destroyed hundreds of plants in nine locations over the weekend.

A police report said the two men were arrested on Friday while they were growing the crop in the district’s Preah Bat Choan Chum commune.

“In accordance with an order from provincial police chief Major General Sok Samnang, Kirivong district police launched raids on Friday and Saturday to locate illegal marijuana farms in the commune,” it said. “Police arrested the two suspects and destroyed plants in nine locations.”

Hundreds of plants were also destroyed in eight other locations in the commune but those responsible for growing them were not there during the two-day crackdown.

The report added the province is a haven for people to secretly grow marijuana on heavily-forested mountains which makes detection difficult.

Major Sok Sopha, district anti-drug bureau chief, said yesterday that police officers uprooted and burnt marijuana plants on nine farms covering a total of 1,022 square metres and identified four ponds which were used for irrigation.
