PHNOM PENH, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Thirty-five students at a high school in northwest Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province suffered food poisoning on Saturday after eating contaminated snacks, said the national police on Sunday.

The incident occurred at around 9:00 a.m. local time at Banteay Chmar high school in Thmar Puok district, the police told Xinhua.

"They had the same symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness and vomit," said Deab Chhoeun, governor of Thmar Puok district, on Saturday in a press release published by the police on Saturday.

He said the ill-fated students had been sent to a local health center soon after the incident and most of them had recovered and returned home.

Chhoeun called on the school vendors to improve food hygiene and students not to eat unhygienic food.

Ten Vannak, vice principal of the Banteay Chmar high school, said as of Saturday afternoon, only five of the victims remained in the health center for further treatment.

He said the students fell ill after eating rice with pork and pickles, and noodles.

My Khmer friends always offer food at the beer sessions.

I don't know really how to say no in the best way.

My friend explains that I like my wife's cooking - which is true. Never sick in 10 years from her scrumptious grub..

I mean - come on now - have you seen hygienic here?

They pick their noses, scratch their privates, shit with no real washing of hands and then handle your plate.

Even the beer glasses (except with handles) - they make a great show of polishing whilst handling the drinking upper half and inside of the glass.

Fuck that for a bag of spanners.

I feel the same. But in my experience, no matter what excuse you give not to eat food offered to you, they know it's because of the hygiene. You can swear that you've only just eaten and you're not hungry until you're blue in the face, they won't believe you. Some will say to me openly that they know it's because of the hygiene, and by doing so, will totally agree with me. Others will just not offer any comment but the look on their face says it all.

If you've grown up with food hygiene standards like that, you've become accustomed to it and it's unlikely to cause you any issues, but I haven't, and I don't plan to start now thanks very much. The last time I attempted to eat 'street food', some years ago, I was about to put the spoonful of soup in my mouth and I noticed two cockroaches running around near my feet. I put the spoon back in the bowl, looked at the soup and all I could imagine were little pellets of cockroach shit swimming around in it. (I didn't see any but just the thought turned my stomach). Have you seen how these bowls and utensils are 'cleaned' and stored at these roadside eateries?

As much as I love living here, I draw the line at eating food which isn't up to a certain level of hygiene standard. No amount of 'oh but I don't want to come across as rude' is worth my health thanks.

I stopped eating street food after I saw the owner of one spray down the meat with Raid to kill the flies that were inside of the container holding it.
