Cambodia enlists tuk-tuk drivers in fight against trafficking

JANUARY 17, 2020
LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Thousands of tuk-tuk drivers in Cambodia are to join the fight against human trafficking under a plan by the ride-hailing app Grab to train drivers to spot and report signs of exploitation.
Grab said on Friday it would provide training for 10,000 drivers in the capital Phnom Penh this month, as it launches a programme it plans eventually to extend to millions of its drivers in Asia.
More than 260,000 of Cambodia’s 16 million people are trapped in modern slavery, according to the Global Slavery Index by the Walk Free Foundation, often in farms, fisheries and construction, many of them children.
“With the extensive network of driver-partners Grab has within Phnom Penh, we want to empower our drivers to serve as an extra pair of eyes and ears on the ground,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Anyone able to go into that a bit further? That's roughly 1 in 64. How are they kept in slavery? Is it domestic or international? Are the passports kept or they held under duress/threat?More than 260,000 of Cambodia’s 16 million people are trapped in modern slavery, according to the Global Slavery Index by the Walk Free Foundation, often in farms, fisheries and construction, many of them children

Grab should teach them to drive first and then to read a map.
After that they can fight crime.
After that they can fight crime.

Also, talking of modern slavery...
Recently, Grab and Pass-App were both accused of making their drivers work for less money due to fare wars between the companies. The drivers say that some drivers are only earning half as much as they used to because of cut-price fares, and it's not enough to feed their families. There have been strikes and protest movements from the drivers.

And so 'modern slaves' aka Grab drivers are expected to take on extra surveillance duties to identify and report human trafficking?CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 4:56 pm Also, talking of modern slavery...

Modern slavery is extending credit to people who cannot pay it back without incurring massive interest.
I saw in USA last 40 years..Argentina...for the last 10...and I see it in Cambodia...
It is all around....
People want things now..
Instead of saving up for them..

So the solution is to not extend credit to the poor and stupid?BR549 wrote:Modern slavery is extending credit to people who cannot pay it back without incurring massive interest.

And run the risk of being labeled a racist?
Or at the very least, being labeled a cruel hearted bastard?
Massive interest is because the likelihood of not paying back is high.
Maybe a public education campaign about responsible borrowing? Teaching people to live within their means?
Even some in the West don’t learn this lesson.
Modern Slavery through irresponsible borrowing. Except these slaves willingly rush to put chains on themselves.
Or just borrow from the barang. Because ever Khmer know that foreigner has gold dripping from their fingers. And of course ‘borrow’ means never having to pay it back (and borrowing some more later).
