Drug Trafficker Bargains Down Sentence by Appeal

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On the morning of 16 September 2022, the Supreme Court heard the appeal of a Khmer Muslim man who was charged with drug trafficking and sentenced by a lower court to 20 years in prison.

Mr. Soeng Panhavuth, Chief Judge of the Supreme Court, stated that the accused was arrested on July 16, 2019 in a rented room in Village 7, Sangkat Kampong Cham and sentenced by the Kampong Cham Provincial Court, on 23 January 2021, to 20 years in prison on charges of drug trafficking in contravention of Article 40 of the Criminal Code and the Law on Drug Control. Evidence provided by the police include three large packages of methamphetamine confiscated during the arrest.

The defendent first appealed to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court of Appeal who reduced his sentence from 20 years to 10 years.
But since he still considered the reduced sentence to be too harsh, he subsequently appealed before the Supreme Court, which has set the date of the announcement of its verdict for the morning of 21 September 2022.
