Cambodia cannot wait any longer

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Cambodia cannot wait any longer

Post by AndyKK »

Cambodia cannot wait any longer of WHO approved COVID-19 vaccine as situation in Cambodia getting worse, says HE

In a voice message, HE explained that he previously affirmed to receive only the vaccine certified by the World Health Organisation (WHO), but in the current coronavirus widespread context, it is no longer possible for Cambodia to wait, that is why the RGC decided to use the COVID-19 vaccine.

500,000 is a far cry from the millions that's needed, twice too in reality with the second being the booster.
All that said I think it's a way with words "such words", the PM said its people would not be the ones to test any vaccine. Well now they are just going to do that, thinking this is just one more political move toward China.

By only ordering a fraction of what's needed, let alone the fact that those ordered are the lowest success rate of any of the vaccines currently available, there's ample opportunity for a booming, unregulated black market in Cambodia. I can see a time when the better vaccines are offered only to those that can afford it, yet with no way of knowing just what's really being injected into your arm.

I would like to take a guess that the figure is more like the minimum number that if all goes well (and it will) the WHO will pass the vaccine.

Yup. Even the UK hasn't been free of fake vaccines, dread to think how bad it'll be in developing countries. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-55680856

again:
what happened to the $40 million ++ people donated ??
surely that could have brought a few million vaccines

The half million vaccines are free, to buy, I saw an add at $100 per vaccine, but no orders less than 10,000

that is what belgian politician Eva De Bleeker published on social media. There are countries who paid more for getting it earlier (ISRAEL).

If it turns out to be 90% effective it'll clearly be the best candidate for countries like Cambodia (based on cost and storage temp)
Tim said it first. ^^^
Even if it turns out less than 90% effective, AstraZenica seems the obvious best choice for Cambodia.
Cheap as chips and no big distribution dramas.
Available too, a number of countries are already producing it themselves under licence.

Factors
Sinovacs is panning out around 50% effective it seems. (but it may turn out higher - like AstraZenica's 64%)
Sinovacs costs around US$13. AZ about $4.
China also wants to use theirs as a goodwill PR tool and a symbol of their ascendancy.

So, AstraZenica is the obvious best choice for Cambodia
but Sinovac will obviously be the only choice.
