Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Kampong Cham, Cambodia News: On Friday, 12 April 2019, Cambodian authorities said that a 60-year-old farmer and his 35-year-old son have been charged with the murders and beheading of a woman and her 6-year-old granddaughter, whose bodies were found in a forest close to their home in Kampng Cham district.

The Kampong Cham Provincial Court charged the two men with murder with aggravating circumstances on Thursday, said James McCabe, operations director of the Child Protection Unit (CPU), a police division supported by the non-governmental Cambodian Children’s Fund.
He said that the two accused men knew the victims, but no motive has been put forward to explain the gruesome act. The investigation team comprised of a task force made up of CPU, national, and local police officers and a visiting Australian forensic pathologist.

The suspects face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

UPDATE from the CPU:

Kampong Cham, Cambodia News: After weeks of rigorous searching, the police and Child Protection Unit (CPU) have at last located the missing heads of the child and her grandmother. They had been separated from the victims' bodies and concealed by the killers.
From the CPU social media page:
TASK FORCE ECHO-19 Investigations Continue.
Image
In what has been a mammoth effort Task Force Investigators have searched more farmland over the past week and have finally discovered the missing remains of the 2 female victims.

This has been a huge task unlike any previous investigation. I want to thank all members for their commitment and dedication in the trying conditions you all faced. The efforts of Kompong Cham Police Command, Ministry of Interior, Cambodian National Police, Scientific Services Department and CPU are to be commended.

Special thanks to our visiting Australian Forensic Pathologist you have been an enormous help providing great guidance in what has been a grizzly and difficult investigation. Also special thanks to the Task Force Command in the coordination of the investigation.

By no means is this investigation over the CPU and Task force members will continue to examine and locate all possible evidence to secure a conviction.
Once again fantastic work.

"The suspects face up to 30 years in prison if convicted."

Should be life without parol for situations like this.

Just my two cents worth, Im sure some may say death penalty would be more appropriate.

There has been no death penalty since 1989. Thirty years in a prison here, especially for a 60 year old, is basically a life sentence.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

upto?

obviously the serial murderer didnt get 30 years the last time

murderers should never be released

they took away a life therefore their own life should also be taken away but not death

if that had have happened, these 2 poor females could still be alive

The relatively light sentences for things like serial killings are a reflection of the pan-Asian cult of group/society as a whole and the disregard for an individual. Individual’s life is not as valuable in Cambodia as in the west, especially if the person was poor. On the other hand, crimes that harm public order or society as a whole (e.g. drugs) are more serious here than killings.

Not only that, but in Cambodia it's OK to be dead. Like Charlie Manson said: Death ain't no thing, man!
