Two British Men Detained for Flying Drone at Midnight in Phnom Penh

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On November 8, at 00:55 am, two British men, LEWIS OLIVER WALKER, 20 years old, and JAY WALLACE MAYCOCK, were detained for flying a drone with camera from their hotel, on street 184, Sangkat Chey Chumneas, Khan Daun Penh, Phnom Penh.

The police confiscated a drone camera FIMI SXE, two phones, and the men's two passports. At 9:30 am this morning, the police sent the two British men to the department against technology offences to follow the legal action.

this looks like a couple of naive young tourists taking aerial selfies well away from anything sensitive
but check their history
I'll bet they've had previous jobs working for 'government'
clearly spies

The drone is a toy sold in Mi shops. Looks like bad timing, you don’t want to drone around the 9th November I guess.

Drones are allowed in Cambodia, and there are no other rules for general use. However, in some areas, there are significant restrictions on the use of multicopters. In the capital, Phnom Penh, you need a special permit for the ascent of a drone as at Angkor Park, or around any historic temples.

Tourists can bring their drones into Thailand. However, they are not allowed to fly their drones here until they have registered their devices with the NBTC or the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). Forms can be downloaded from the NBTC here (in Thai) and from the CAAT here (in English).

Drones are banned from flying in PP since Feb 2015 without prior approval.

Cambodian authorities issued a directive Monday banning drones from the airspace of the nation’s capital city without prior approval, citing privacy and security concerns.

“To ensure the respect for the rights of people and to maintain security, safety and public order, the Phnom Penh municipality decides to ban camera-equipped drones from flying over Phnom Penh’s airspace from now on,” the directive read.
