The French used to tie a bell onto the big toe of the deceased and lead a line out of the grave to a stick with a bell on it. Just in case someone should wake up dead. Apparently a lot coma victims were pronounced dead and buried.

When did Cambodians start burying their dead. Well I guess the Sino-Khmer do that. My GF tells a story of her being electrocuted (not lightning) and was thought dead when she was unconscious for 3+hrs. Upon awakening was unable to speak for a day. That last part is the most unbelievable. Hmmmm.

Yes having watch that Vincent Price movie, where the family has a history of catatonic coma states, then his narration when it happens to him, he is lying there looking dead, and fully awake, bemoaning in total terror. Terrified me when younger that movie.

Re: buried not cremated
Maybe they are non-buddhist camdodians? How do the original ethnic villagers proceed?

Or the pagoda was too far or was unable to cremate that day so they temporarily buried her?

In stung treng 3km west of town centre is a graveyard, it still has the old sign at entrance, reading "chinese school". It has graves written in chinese, khmer, vietnamese and english. Maybe all here can choose burial over cremation?

i need to start asking tactfully some friends if burial is common in some provinces.

Chinese and Vietnamese bury their dead, as do Chams and minorities.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

For some bizarre reason, when someone is struck by lightning or electrocuted in Cambodia, people quickly bury/cover the victim in sand or soil because they believe that is the best treatment (?).

You can see by the picture that they have just covered the victim in soil, above ground, with the head still exposed, in the space under their house...they haven't actually buried the victim.

I believe there is a thread about this practice over on k440.

I think the sand is intended to cool the body. Electrocution results in internal organs being cooked.

In those cases usually a backyard BBQ is in order.
