Whatever happened to / Cambodia’s Dragon City?
By: Robin Spiess - Posted on: March 2, 2019 | Cambodia
Nine years ago, Cambodia’s Land Ministry proposed a new, high-tech capital called “Dragon City” on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. Nearly a decade later, the $80bn development has yet to break ground – but the visionary behind the ambitious project is hoping that changing the Kingdom’s strict foreign ownership laws may tempt Chinese investors back to the bargaining table
Nearly a decade ago, Cambodia’s Land Ministry introduced plans for a new capital city that were as opulent as they were otherworldly. The grand proposal was erected at a technology conference, where an entire gallery was filled with plastic towers built in the image of a brand new, futuristic Cambodia: bright blue and green towers stretched their silver spires toward the conference room ceiling, their glossy finish reflecting the dingy incandescent light of the bulbs shining overhead.
This was the public’s first glimpse of the “Dragon City”, laid out in all its plastic-and-cardboard glory, and many were in awe. “Phnom Penh will look like New York by 2025!” exulted one excited viewer, sharing his reaction on an internet forum in December 2010. The project designers put out a call for a staggering $80 billion in investment to build the new capital. At the time, Cambodia’s gross domestic product was just $11.24 billion.
A curious mix of Angkor Wat-like construction – complete with moats and galleries laid out in the sacred geometry of Hindu antiquity – as well as the sweeping roofs of ancient Chinese architecture, the project was named “Samdech Techo HE Dragon City” in honour of Cambodian Prime Minister HE’s royal title and zodiac sign. Nevertheless, even in its most nascent form the city appeared to stand as a glittering homage to China – and, in that respect as in many others, little has changed over the past nine years.

I think this project is still proceeding, it's just that they changed the name to Westport, and they changed the location a bit further south. Other than that everything else is the same,,,, one big dream.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Re: Whatever Happened to Cambodia’s "Dragon City"?
There is no similarities with it. The Samdech HE Dragon City was supposed to be actual city in north of Phnom Penh, almost 40,0000 hectares in size, it would have cost $80 billion to build and all the government administration offices would have been there. The Dragon City now announced it just a 25 hectare traditional neighbourhood with residential, commercial and industrial areas within it.pczz wrote: ↑Sun Sep 01, 2019 12:11 pmbut it will go the same way.
