Strange request from VN government to KH Government

The government has rejected Vietnam’s request to automatically naturalise its citizens who are residing in the Kingdom without legal documents.
“We clearly responded that Cambodia has its own laws, including laws on nationality and immigration,” Mr Vun said. “Therefore, we cannot automatically naturalise Vietnamese citizens who have been illegally living here for a long time.”
“However, they can apply to be citizens,” he added. “It is required by our laws.”

It's not so strange if you follow the situation of ethnic Vietnamese residing in Cambodia. Many of them are now residing in Cambodia without legal documents, because the Cambodian authorities have declared that the documents that were previously legal are now illegal. This has put many Vietnamese-Cambodians in a difficult position.

It's not so strange if you follow the situation of ethnic Vietnamese residing in Cambodia. This has put many Vietnamese-Cambodians in a difficult position.

Not so strange. Around ten years ago, VN wanted all it's citizens living on cross border plantations to be given Cambodian citizenship. Cambodia refused. This request is another attempt to baby step things in that direction using the ethnic VN population, once again, as pawns. Think of it as a counter balance to the Chinese invasion and looming citizenship surge.
