Drunk Man Jumps into Garbage Canal, Phnom Penh

Cambodia Breaking News (Phnom Penh): On June 9, 2019, at 10 pm, a drunk man jumped into a garbage canal on street 1986/598, Sangkat Phnom Penh Thmei, Khan Sen Sok, Phnom Penh.

Before the incident, the man was drunk, and he drove a Zoomer-X plate PP1HG-8906 on street 598 until he stopped and went into the spicy noodle shop. Suddenly, he ran out of the shop and jumped off the bridge into the garbage canal.

The police and the local people hunted for the man in the garbage for half an hour before they found him under the bridge. The man was helped out of the canal and then the police took him to the police station for questioning.

WTF is a garbage canal, is it an official place that everybody throws the garbage and hopes it will magically disappear.

PS I know what a shit canal is as I can see and smell the disgusting open sewer, but garbage canal !!!!!

Actually, "Garbage Canal" seems to be the name of this particular canal.

I suspect "garbage" here is a Khmer word pronounced 'gar-ba-ge'.. Hopefully, one of the Khmer language expetts can enlighten us with regard to its meaning.

I know that canal well, used to go past it a few times a day. It's got some stinky water in there of course as it's on the outlet side of the 598 dike pumping station. It has quite a bit of vegetation around though which looks kind of exotic. Here's a picture of the area in 2000 and 2019. The only green patch in the middle of the bottom view, southwest of the mushroom cloud is where the last decent swamp is.
