Cambodia Celebrates Breaking 2 Guinness World Records with Giant Freshwater Stingray

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Cambodia News: At a National Workshop on the status of freshwater Giant Stingrays in the Mekong region, held at the Himawari Hotel in collaboration with the Wonder of the Mekong (WoM) Project, Cambodia secured two Guinness World Records. The event was organized by the Fisheries Administration.

Cambodia has been honored with two world records for its remarkable discovery. The first record acknowledges Cambodia for harboring the world's largest freshwater stingray, weighing a staggering 300kg, named Boramey. Additionally, Cambodia clinched the distinction for possessing the world's largest female freshwater fish.

This groundbreaking discovery stems from the accidental capture of the giant freshwater stingray in Cambodia, leading to its confirmation in June 2022 as the world's largest freshwater fish by Guinness World Records. Following the capture, Boramey was tagged with an acoustic transmitter and released back into the Mekong River by the research team from the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute (IFREDI) of Fisheries Administration and Wonders of the Mekong (WoM).

Has Sareth, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), emphasized the commitment of the Ministry and the sub-national administration to conservation efforts, particularly focusing on the protection and development of fishery resources along the Mekong River in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces. These provinces serve as crucial habitats and breeding grounds for dolphins and several other endangered fish species.

Sareth highlighted the collaboration between the Fisheries Administration and development partners in conducting research on fisheries science techniques. This includes monitoring changes in fishery resources and fisheries ecosystems, a vital aspect of their conservation endeavors.

What a beast !
Weird that the fish has been given a name already, but that the fisherman remains unknown.
