Kampong Speu Teacher Shot Dead While Eating Lunch

Kompong Speu, Cambodia News: On May 8, 2019, at around 1 pm, there was a shocking incident at Tang Aun Orphanage School in Kampong Speu province, when a teacher was shot dead while eating lunch with other teachers in the school.

After the gunman shot the victim, he attempted to escape, but the police arrested the man and took him away for interrogation at the provincial police station. The man has been named as 30-year-old Rasy, from Banteay Meanchey province. The motive for the shooting is reported to be a personal problem between the two men.

UPDATE: The suspect was identified as Thoun Thane Rasy, 29, who is divorced from his wife, but continued to be jealous. His wife was seeing another man, a 25-year-old sports teacher called Touch Veasna, and Rasy became mad with anger when he saw the couple posted on Facebook together. So, he got hold of a gun and went after his ex-wife's boyfriend and shot him dead, and said that he would also shoot his ex-wife. Fortunately, police have taken him into custody.

Upon learning of his ex-wife’s new relationship, Mr Theanyreasey became angry with Mr Veasna. Mr Theanyreasey proceeded to search for the victim’s home address, workplace and also learned about his day-to-day activities.

Cap Vuthy noted that after finding all the information, at about 11.30am on Wednesday, Mr Theanyreasey followed Mr Veasna to the school where he worked. By 12pm, Mr Veasna and his friends went to have lunch just outside of the school.

“While the victim was eating, Mr Theanyrease approached him,” Cap Vuthy said. “As he came closer to the victim, Mr Theanyreasey took out a pistol and shot the victim’s neck, which caused him to die immediately.”

“During the shooting, everyone who sat nearby the victim did not dare to help. They ran away at the sight of Mr Theanyreasey’s gun,” he added.

Cap Vuthy said that afterwards, Mr Theanyreasey fled the location on his motorbike, which he parked about six meters from where the shooting happened. Mr Veasna’s friends soon alerted the police following Mr Theanyreasey’s departure.

Within 30 minutes, Mr Theanyreasey was arrested and the police seized a pistol along with eight unused bullets, his identification card and a motorbike.
