My friedn just bought 3 apartment building in greece, 1 mile from the beach in a nice village location for EUR30,000 (plus (EUR20,000 legal fees and taxes)
beer is Euro1 a bottle, local moonshine considerably less. Decent cafe meal about EUR5, marlborogh Eur4 a pcaket. Cambodia is not cheap anymore. Rental inflatio is insane, and so is western food. I think if you do not feel the ned to chase women its probably as cheap in part of europe as Cambodia.

Cambodia is not the bargain basement country many people make it out to be. It can be a very cheap place to live or retire to, or it can be very expensive. In that respect, it's no different to many other countries. It's subjective - it all depends on your expectations and the quality of life you desire. - As the above poster pointed out, there are many places in Europe where the cost of living can be comparable in many aspects.

The cost of living in the KOW, for the natives, and for now, reitavely speaking, is remaining relatively stable, but many Khmers have told me that there is a big concern that the cost of living is soon going to start to rise and many of the poorer Khmers simply won't be able to keep up.

Cambodia is changing fast. Very fast. What might like seem an affordable place to retire to today might not be the paradise you moved to even just 3 - 6 years in the future.

If you are an eu citizen you do not have to pay for a visa, work permit, driving license, health insurance, not even a passportin EU. That saves about $600 a year. Your phone has to roam for free so no second sim card needed.If you like to live on Cambdian food and dont want too many home comforts then Cambodia is still failry cheap bu i am buggerred if I can live on less than $700 a month half of which is rent, $50 towards visas etc. Its not the bargain it was for europeans anymore but still probably decent for people from other developed economies. Someone tole me the other week a chinese had complained the rent in sihanoukville is now higher than shanghai

OK the only thing that's expensive is electric bills and car ownership. All the rest is cheaper in my experience. Prove me wrong?
Edit: just read the article again... a bottle of sparkling wine for $25?! You can have a bottle of great Prosecco for $12 in every market in Cambodia, so their figures are probably greatly (bigly) inflated.

I was once told by a very wealthy investor / economist (friend of a friend) that if you want to gauge whether a city/country is worth invesing in, don't bother looking at market forecasts, don't waste your time reading financial papers, forget looking for other people's opinions online, simple go there, get yourself a good vantage point and look at the amount of construction going on. How many cranes can you see? (he was using London as an example - I know they largely seem to get by without cranes here, but the principle is the same)

This will tell you all you need to know about the direction a country is going in and whether it's worth investing in. If you think it's worth investing in, so do many other people.

Cambodia today will be unrecognisable in a very short time. For the natives, for a foreigner to move to, and for a pensioner to retire to.

But of course, we all know, it's already started.

I'd hold off for the dream place to retire to for the time being if it were me.

Edit: just read the article again... a bottle of sparkling wine for $25?! You can have a bottle of great Prosecco for $12 in every market in Cambodia, so their figures are probably greatly (bigly) inflated.

the only things i find cheaper in Cambodia over Thailand is Drinking alcohol,( beer, spirits, wine), smoking cigs, some western food items in the supermarkets and some Barang food in cheaper restaurants
everything else is more

the only things i find cheaper in Cambodia over Thailand is Drinking alcohol,( beer, spirits, wine), smoking cigs, some western food items in the supermarkets and some Barang food in cheaper restaurants

even thats not true anymore, was drinking pints of Tiger in a walking street agogo (Atlantis) tonight for less than $3... a pint!
i rarely pay more than $2-3 for a bottle of San Miguel light ($3.50-4 in PP) anywhere here

If it's mostly cheaper in Thailand than Cambodia. . Then you know Cambodia is now freaking spenseeve

For the most part, when you are comparing beer prices you would do it with domestic beer prices, not imports. Also, Beer Economics is a real thing when done properly and not done by some guy sitting in a gogo bar at 1 am. I can get Tiger draft in PP for....$1...a pint! Any time of day, wow!!
