The carnage on the Cambodian roads continues in 2019.

10 January 2019: From time to time, the Cambodian authorities release the road accident statistics. 2019 has started strongly with 43 deaths on the Cambodian roads over a period of only ten days.
Officials say that in the first ten days of January 2019, traffic accidents killed a total of 43 people, and there were also 220 injuries in 109 separate incidents.
On 10 January, between the hours of 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, six traffic accidents killed two people and nine were injured, nationwide.

‘Action needed to stop road deaths doubling by next year’

Minister of Interior Sar Kheng has expressed concern over the rate of traffic accidents, saying the death toll will double by 2020 if no effective preventive measures were put in place. At least five people on average are killed on Cambodian roads every day.

The interior minister was speaking at the annual road safety meeting at the ministry on Friday.

Sar Kheng, who is chairman of the Road Safety Committee, stressed that the high rate of traffic accidents was the issue of most concern for Cambodians and that it required all relevant parties to implement effective preventive measures in order to ensure public safety.

“In Cambodia, according to the estimates of road safety experts, if there are no effective preventive measures brought in, the death toll from road accidents will climb to 3,200 a year by 2020. So we need to prevent such a situation in order to save the lives of Cambodians,” he said.

According to official statistics from the Traffic and Public Order Department at the National Police, at least 1,761 people were killed and 4,770 injured in road accidents last year.

Based on these figures, at least five people died every day on the roads. The provinces with the highest death tolls were Preah Sihanouk, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom and Phnom Penh.

It would be interesting [ for me ] to see a breakdown of those figures to see if they were mostly at night time or daytime. I note that at night almost no-one riding a moto wears a helmet. Also never see any cops.

I can't understand this.
H.E. has stated in the past, that it is clear to see, Khmer are such good drivers that they dont and shouldn't need a licence to be riding a moto on the roads.
Maybe it's the foreign drivers that are contributing to these shocking numbers?

Also worth knowing how many of the injured people succumb to their wounds and become part of the statistics.

The only penalty for driving poorly in Cambodia is causing a traffic accident. And generally lots of close calls before said accident happens.

In other countries, the police actually catch and some these arrest those who do that.

Take the helmet law for motos. Helmets are worn because the cops catch those that don’t.

If the cops start arresting those driving the wrong way, driving on sidewalks, etc., for starters, accident rates would be sure to plummet.

No, this is Cambodia,,, They should arrest those that are walking on the road and not on the footpath.

You mean sidewalk? I think footpath is an ACE word.

The sidewalk that always has cars and moto parked on it? To be fair, I saw dumpsters worth of trash left in the middle of street on the way to the airport today. A new first for me.

Anyways, that has to be on the cops must fix list. Get rid of cars and moto parking on the sidewalks and build parking garages.

Guess we could argue about who was walking on the side of the street first.
American English is fine but to say that one means American English rather than English English, might be seen as labouring a point.

Before they invented streets for things with wheels , there were footpaths through the forest.
