Swiss charged over Facebook threat

Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court charged said a Swiss tourist on Saturday for threatening a French tourist on Facebook and attempting to extort $1,000.

Major Sok Veasna, a provincial police officer, identified the accused as Richard Erik Stiogson, a 32-year-old tourist from Switzerland.

Maj Veasna said that Mr Stiogson was charged with extortion and could face up to two years in prison if convicted.
He noted that Mr Stiogson has been sent to prison pending trial.

Maj Veasna said that the victim, 28-year-old Nexraud Arthur, a French tourist, owed Mr Stiogson $1,000 and was unable to pay.

He said that on Wednesday, Mr Siogson sent a message to Mr Arthur, ordering the latter to pay his debt before Thursday.

“Mr Stiogson said on Facebook that he’d kill Mr Arthur if he failed to repay the money on time,” Maj Veasna said. “The victim feared for his life and he filed a complaint with provincial police.”

Mr Stiogson was later arrested on Thursday afternoon in accordance with the complaint, he said.

Police confiscated a vegetable knife from Mr Stiogson, Maj Veasna noted.
