Somaly Mam: The Holy Saint (and Sinner) of Sex Trafficking

her story which gained international attention seems to have more than a few cracks in it.

Mam has raised millions with a hectic schedule of meetings all over the globe with the good, the great and the super-rich—from the U.N.’s Ban Ki-moon to the pope. One day she will be speaking at the White House, and the next day she’ll be enthralling schoolchildren in a remote corner of Cambodia.

Mam claims to have rescued thousands of girls and women from sex trafficking, a dangerous and formidable feat. Her story becomes even more inspiring when you hear her shocking tale of being sold into sexual slavery. In 2005, she published her autobiography, The Road of Lost Innocence, which became an international best-seller. Mam was one of Time’s 100 most influential people in 2009 and has over 400,000 followers on Twitter

Former employees in Cambodia of both AFESIP and the foundation admit they knew about some of the questionable techniques used to raise awareness and funding, but they say nobody spoke up due to a mixture of fear of Mam and threats from others. “Why does everybody keep quiet about everything?” Blase asks. “I think it’s very hard to accept that a woman who is in a nurturing position, which she sort of is, has the capacity to be the way Somaly is.… People keep their mouths shut because it’s in their own self-interest to do so.”

Thank you for posting this Richard. Most people know the story but this seems to be the first Mainstream publication revealing the dark underbelly of NGOs.
What's fun is the comments section. The deniers vs truthers.

Some saying it doesn't matter if she lied her ass off for funding girls rehab. Others claiming rape under her care & misspent donations. You're a liar, no you're a liar.
Classy informed people vs drones. lol

so its true

the Means justify the ends

Andrew Drummond first reported the scam back in Oct 2013 so it took mainstream over 6 months to catch up

http://www.andrew-drummond.com/2013/10/ ... fools.html
It has been rumbling for a while but a scandal in Cambodia surrounding the false claims of a charity dedicated to helping child sex slaves has erupted in the capital Phnom Penh and like rolling thunder will I assume finally hit Hollywood, and New York’s glitterati.

It seems the charities created by Somaly Mam an attractive Cambodian lady lauded in Time magazine in 2009 as one of the world top 100 most influential women and highly praised by the New York Times, are based on considerable hyping.....
and first attracted attention as far back as April 2012 in the Cambodian daily

Dear Supporters,

This morning, Newsweek Magazine issued a story on its web site containing allegations about Somaly Mam’s history and several former grant partner beneficiaries.

As we noted in our letter of April 4th, the Foundation is taking these matters with the utmost seriousness and has previously launched an independent, third party investigation to further examine these claims.

We hope to have more information to share with our supporters in due course. In the meantime, we will remain steadfast in our work and dedicated to the women and girls that we serve everyday.

In the coming weeks, we hope you’ll continue your unwavering support, and help us ensure that the world remains focused on the anti-trafficking movement and our efforts to create a world where all human beings are safe from slavery.

We can’t thank you enough for standing with us through this challenging time, and for supporting us in our mission to eradicate the trafficking and sexual exploitation of women and girls in Southeast Asia.

In solidarity,

Gina Reiss-Wilchins
Executive Director
Somaly Mam Foundation

Nice to see they are NOT saying the Newsweek article is full of lies.

We are reviewing ways to whitewash this, so donors don't feel too stupid.

Our overpaid PR Dept in conjunction with 3rd party spin-doctors is working on some new whoppers to paper this over.

No commitment to publish results.

Impure thoughts like Jimmy Carter. /jk

I was joking. If Karma worked there would be less ppl on the world.

When you pass, you pass. the end. some hope there is a nirvana but what do i know.

Karma is a delusion of status.
