Cambodian Woman Trafficking Heroin to Australia from Jail FacesTrial

Convict faces life for drug trafficking
September 6, 2018
The drug trafficking trial of a 48-year-old woman already imprisoned for narcotics began yesterday at Phnom Penh Municipal Court with the judge saying the woman could face life in prison.

Presiding Judge Veng Huot yesterday identified the convict as Sin Sophol, who is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence for trafficking heroin in 2015.

Judge Huot said that Ms Sophal attempted to ship drugs to Australia through an acquaintance while behind bars.

The judge said Ms Sophal has been charged with trafficking drugs.

Ms Sophal in November last year ordered Taing Chi Keng, an Australian-Cambodian national, to transport two kilograms of heroin to Australia through a travel agency, the judge said.

Judge Huot added that Mr Chi Keng escaped arrest when the package of drugs was discovered at Phnom Penh International Airport in November.

Following a police investigation, Ms Sophal was later identified as the ringleader.

“She’s a convicted drug dealer, but she did not want to correct herself to become a good person,” Judge Huot said. “While she was serving time in prison, she continued to commit drug offences from behind bars by ordering her associate to transport heroin from Cambodia to Australia.”
