Bavet Police Say: Vietnamese Casino Employees Breaking Windows, Screaming for Help, were Protesting Working Hours
Cambodia News, (Svay Rieng Province): Svay Rieng Provincial Police is honored to inform the public and users of the social network Facebook that on the evening of July 18, 2023, some Cambodian media reported that there was trouble at a casino in Bavet City where many people were shouting for help; a video posted online allegedly shows about 10 Vietnamese people breaking through the windows of the building, crying and begging for help from outside. The local Cambodian residents were deeply shocked and immediately called the police.
However, the Svay Rieng Provincial Police would like to confirm the following version of events:
"On July 18, 2023, at 3:30 pm, a local resident reported to the police that he saw an employee of the Paris East Casino Company smashing the glass of a window on the 6th floor building at the back and shouting for police to come and save them.
Immediately after receiving the above information, and with the coordination of His Excellency the Prosecutor, our authorities and relevant authorities arrived at the scene to inspect a total of 35 employees of the Vietnamese casino company, who had gathered, but were not working, on the 6th floor amid a pile of damaged computer equipment belonging to the casino company.
The Cambodian authorities invited the above 35 Vietnamese staff to the Bavet City Police Inspectorate for questioning the next day on the morning of July 19, 2023.
After the initial interrogation of the 35 employees, the workers told the police that they were protesting for better working conditions, but they were not being detained against their will or extorted by the casino. The Vietnamese workers said they were not imprisoned or trying to break out of the casino and escape, they were simply asking the owners for an improvement in their everyday working conditions.
At present, all 35 employees, along with one company administration and one manager, are being interrogated by the competent authorities and continue the procedure at the Bavet City Police Inspectorate. Therefore, please, public and Facebook users, don't spread rumors about Vietnamese workers being held as hostages in casinos and trying to escape."** [End of quote.]
**Take note that this is the version of events, as told by the competent police authorities of Svay Rieng to Cambodian media in reply to allegations of a mass escape attempt by Vietnamese cyberslaves which appeared online.

Great that this has been cleared up! For a moment, I was worried that Vietnamese workers were being held as hostages in casinos and were trying to escape.

So did it work? Did their working conditions improve?
I was going to ask for a better bonus this year and it sounds like they might of given me a good way about doing it

VIDEO:
The casino implicated in the incident has been named as ORIENTAL PARIS CASINO. According to Em Sovanrith, the Bavet city police chief, a Chinese man not related to the casino had rented the 6th floor of the building where the protests were held.
“I don’t know their business because I have not asked for details about their jobs,” Sovanrith said. “I had only asked about damaging properties.”
